Is the Darnold Experiment Over?

Too much Jets Darnold but the offense around him are playing at Jets quality.

Overall, just the former Jet Robby Anderson.

Collectively, our skill position players have performed well around him on the year IMO.  Especially DJ.  CMC was a beast when healthy.  Chubba IMO is overachieving given the OL and his inexperience.   Everyone catch rate when targeted is solid (again, minus Robbh which is just comically bad).

Seriously he’s a work in progress. He’s shown some progress and he’s had issues. Expecting him to play like a franchise QB when this OLine is basically the same he’s had with the Jets the last few years is unreasonable. He played well enough for us to win if there wasn’t a ton of drops by the receivers. Somehow you can’t expect him to continually outperform when he’s put in an unfavorable down and distance after each drop.

Thank you, someone that gets it.

Meh.  Maybe.  In all likelihood they're going to put a (hopefully better) OL in front of him for that 2nd year, say they failed him this year or w/e, and let him ride out the 5th year though.

Who knows how that will turn out.

Assuming his attitude doesn't change and we go through cycles of good and bad performances, I do think we invest in the OL next year (unless a very good QB prospect falls to us in the draft), bring in another backup QB option, and go into his 5th year option saying how much we support him but expecting to draft / find his replacement at the end of the year.  I know that sucks for us as fans in a lot of ways, but I also think it makes more sense than sticking a rookie behind a shitty OL and expecting something different than what we've seen so far.

We will never know if Darnold would have been rehabilitated by a competent OL in front of him, because we didn't assemble that. It's also unlikely we are able to remedy that completely next offseason.

What we do know is that even with better weapons and with a "better" offensive scheme, Sam Darnold looks just as bad as he did in New York.

I think the writing is just simply on the wall for Darnold. He just isn't an NFL caliber starting QB. In reality, that writing was rather evident prior to him signing in Carolina but we were desperate after our better options were unavailable.

What that means for us is less clear. The QB class from college is absolutely dreadful and we have less draft picks than normal. The free agent class may offer some hope but the prices may be extreme. So, although Sam Darnold is very clearly not the future here, we might see him start next year or at least be in a competition for the spot.

As if it was that easy, there is still 11 games left.

We will be looking at QBs going forward, might not be a better option out there this offseason or have the option of justifying him being here next year ( cough Teddy cough) taken off the table. Dude is a vet next year, he is what he is at this point. He's a moth and not a butterfly at this point. I think Tepper is going to realize he needs to sell tickets and Darnold is unlikely to do that at this point, I expect him to put more pressure than last year to improve that spot though I wouldn't rule out a developmental QB leaving us with another year of what we are facing down again this year.

We're going to be a run first team with 3 receiving options better than any of the other players on past rookie 1k seasons. If you can't understand that, then it's a you problem, not a me problem. Arizona's previous basketball coach, Sean Miller, used to do something at the first team meeting of every season and I think it's soooooooooo applicable to this situation. He'd have every player right down how many minutes/points they expected to average that season and then he'd add them up.  It would show that if they all hit those numbers, we'd score like 125 points a game and need to be playing 7 guys at a time to get their minutes. That's pretty much how you guys are putting your T-Mac expectations out there, looking solely at the player and what you think he should be able to do, not how the offense will operate as a whole. Every yard one player gets is one less yard someone else can get.  It sounds like I just have more faith in Thielen, XL, and Coker this year than most everyone else.  But a big reason for that faith is because of T-Mac and how much he'll open things up for the rest of them and Bryce being the type of QB to take the open easy passes than force it to his #1. As I've said, if any one of the following happens... Thielen ends the season sub 700 yards, XL or Coker end up sub 500 yards... Then yes, I will then shift my expectations for T-Mac's rookie year to be at least 1,000 yard season. But since I have faith in those other 3 having solid seasons, it tempers my expectations yardage totals for T-Mac this year, and this year alone.  I've also clearly stated many times that I think he's going to reach 10 TDs. If T-Mac ends the season with 800 yards and 10 TDs, while Thielen gets 900-1,000 and XL/Coker each get around 600, I don't see any world where that is a failure for a rookie season for T-Mac. Because again, we're talking about expectations, not what is possible.  So given the other WR options, I can't EXPECT T-Mac to get to the 1k mark, which is a far cry from me saying I don't think he can get there. Do you really not see the difference there?
    • I don't recall anyone seeing this coming.  I mean, two seperate things for me.  I thought BB just might not work in college football because he is old grumpy man and college is about appealing to young kids.   So yeah, that could of gone great or horrible.  Coin flip.  This isn't that convo for me.  what we are witnessing right now play out.....this was never part of the disaster possibility/path discussed lol.  Really weird stuff.  Or maybe I missed the part where UNC hires a 20 year old "girlfriend" that apparently runs the Bill operation and before the season even starts is taking over more than just Bill but influence of the entire UNC operation.  That was her getting that official statement made today.  It was her sabotaging the Hard Knocks UNC show because she somehow wasn't the star.  Seems like elder abuse lol.  Only largely kidding.  You even got Charles Barkley saying he normally doesn't talk about personal lives of his friends but he might have to check in on Bill because this ain't normal stuff lol.  Anyway, it's entertaining.  Everything is a cartoon it seems these days.
    • I think its strange how you were claiming this guy was the second coming of Mike Evans and you can't even get behind 1k yards? I guess I have more faith in him than you
