He's the single most productive pass rusher.

Thats true, but pass rushers are also the most expensive position other than QB. Given our scheme, I think if we had to, we could find a replacement for him easier than Gilmore.

Im not arguing that he's not good, but if you had to choose either or, given our defensive scheme I would let him go.

We can sign all 3, easily. The question is whether that money is better spent elsewhere. I'd sign Reddick, no question. You aren't replacing him. Then play semi-hardball with the corners and see who will accept a reasonable, team friendly offer. If neither, roll with Horn, Bouye, Henderson, Hartsfield and Keith Taylor Jr. That's still a good secondary.

I feel like a 2 year, $20 million contract for Gilmore would make sense and let the young guys grow into their roles. Patrick Peterson is a good comp and he just got 1 year, $8 million. Just not sure if the market will dictate more than that, and if so, not sure if it's worth it.

No reason to let any of them walk out the door, you can restructure long term pieces (CMC, Moton, Shaq, Robby, etc), structure the new contracts to have low year one cap hits (add on void years included), extend players to lower cap hits (DJ Moore), and maybe save some dollars to facilitate a Darnold move (like with Teddy).

The salary cap is not real and the Panthers have acted like it is for too long.

It’s Gilmore (as the one left out) and it’s obvious (unless he takes a team friendly deal).

He’s 31 and has a significant history of injuries.

- Hand Wrist Fracture (5 Games), Inguinal Hip Tear (Off-season Surgery), Inguinal Groin Pull (1 Game), First Concussion (1 Game - Season Finale), Torn Labrum (Final 4 Games - Surgery), Second Concussion (1 Game - Season Finale), Third Concussion (3 Games), Knee Strain (3 Games), Quad Tear (Final 5 Games - PUP List starting 2021)

Not to mention the age wall for CB’s is right around 27 before they start to decline. In 2019 there were 263 players that qualified for PFF’s coverage grading, only 20 of those individuals were over 30 and only 5 ranked in the top 25 in PFF’s grading (Jason McCourty, Devin McCourty, Richard Sherman, Joe Haden, Janoris Jenkins).

Their current contracts are as follows:

Jason McCourty - still an above average player - 1 yr./$1.2M (Dolphins)

Devin McCourty - slightly above average player - 2 yr./$23M (Patriots)

Richard Sherman - below average player - 1 yr./$1.35M (Bucs)

Joe Haden - slightly above average player - 2 yr./$22.4M (Steelers)

Janoris Jenkins - still an above average player - 2 yr./$15M (Titans)

In all likelihood Gilmore will want a Joe Haden contract and the Panthers will want a Jenkins contract. If Gilmore declines you go with the younger player in Donte Jackson or the elite pass rusher in Reddick.

If Gilmore agrees to a Jenkins type contract then you structure it exactly like the Titans did… cap hit of $4.5M in the first year and $10.5 in the second year. With Darnold, Erving, Bouye, and Fox coming off the book next year there would still be plenty of room to re-sign D.J. Moore.

    • Poverty franchise behavior.  If you don't like him as a 3rd rounder then why'd you draft him there?  As others have said, they likely found out some new information and have buyer's remorse. Our FO didn't give DJ Johnson a hard time for being a bad pick.
    • Best I heard its a clause the bungals want to add. It prevents them form paying the full guaranteed amount if triggered. No one knows the details of the clause, but guesses are it relates to off-field stuff. Stewart is in the right here. Before they signed burrow, chase, and Higgins they were the cheapest team in the league bar none. Unlike tepper or jarrah Jones or any other NFL ownership, all Mike brown owns is the beagals. Every other owner has many other money making businesses, not bungals.  I still remember when Brenston Bunker was starting on WFNZ and he told the story about the beagals telling him to pick a used cup form a huge pile, LOLS! They been on hard knocks and I remember Marvin lewis telling the players not to take home Gatorade bottles........* but in that case, I believe some players were taking a back pack and filling it up with drinks. Still you make millions(around 200million) in net profit and Im sure coke gave the team those bottles, still... Its a 32 team billion business, someone has to the cheapest.....Panthers were around the next cheapest team before tepper bought them and he has POURED millions upon millions into the team. He bought a bubble that Richardson never would, so the team had to gather in a old building during the rain. He spent millions on coofus machines that he just gave away like the bubble. Tepper made that AC trailer a thing. I've trashed him about his concerts and taking away end zone seats from fans. But the guy will spend money any way in efforts to better the team, dang I just remembered the deal he gave Rhule- more than Andy Reid at the time.  I know results have not came, but Id 100% take Tepper over Mike brown as a owner.
    • There's no way they're shipping you some uniform you haven't seen lol.  I feel like they'd just refund you and ask if you wanted the new one when it launched. Probably just making the blues the primary, or a new helmet for a new alternate/variation.
