Here's a hot take ( from a nutter )

Yeah...was it Bill Voth or Darin Gantt or @Zod who said that Cam Newton makes people stupid.  I feel like that is really appropriate in this circumstance.

I mean, I get that the dude is stumping for a group of people who have questionable beliefs in anything, but if we just look at football, it's not even close.  The Golden Calf of Bristol was a fun story, but even God couldn't help him secure a long term starting gig.  TGCOB was a great college player who never had the ability to play in the NFL.

Anyone with 30-40 working brain cells can see that.  Now folks don't like Cam because he's himself?  Welcome to 2021.  Cam helped to break the mold of the dad jeans say nothing QB.  I mean, people didn't like Joe Namath because he was authentic.  For every QB who had an outsized personality, there were always detractors.

Now QBs are much more free to be who they want.  Want to be a white new balance, bowling shirt and acid washed jeans Russel Wilson?  Go for it!  Want to be a whiney melomaniac?  Feel free Aaron Rodgers!  Braided leather belts?  By all means Matt Ryan!

Cam took the heat, and made it much easier for QBs to express themselves as the person they were - not just the boring mouthpiece of a coach.

Purely? I don’t think so. You can be butthurt and racist lol. He checks the boxes for that. If cam is a criminal for buying a stolen laptop in college then I should be locked up for life for the poo I did as a kid.

I am not even saying he isn't racist, he is a Gator fan.

But that didn't seem as racist as it was butthurt. He's pretty much throwing the book at him. Rumors, innuendos, just pure hatred. That's really usually more sports fan hatred than racist hatred, it's even less rational than racist hatred.

Just my take but I have seen many a hate filled diatribe from butthurt sports fans before and that checks ALL the boxes of that.

Agree to disagree. It was on some Nolan “fake smile” whatever his last name was level to me.

That's a stupid tweet.

The reason The Golden Calf of Bristol isn't in the league is his own ego.

If he had tried to switch positions when he was young he might have had a chance.

Football unlike some professions is all about merit. At least it's supposed to be. The best players play period.

That was my favorite part of the Bible thumping The Golden Calf of Bristol supporters. They refused to acknowledge his pride not allowing him to stay in the NFL.

What is the old adage, "Pride comes before the fall?" Whoops.

I know.

Tim is a great guy has done tons of great things off the field he's just not a good enough NFL QB.

It's just one thing that people who get emotionally attached to players can't fathom. Who they are as people will always be trumped by their ability to play.

Hence why I roll my eyes at all the "Darnold is a nice guy!" comments here.

I don't have any evidence that he isn't a nice guy, I have no reason to not believe he isn't a nice guy.

But he is arguably the worst QB to ever play for this franchise and he directly lost us games this season. Directly and almost solely in some games. That's the truth.

No amount of Matt Kalil being a nice guy and being able to get a hot wife will ever make me not angry at how fuging awful of a LT he was.

The funniest part is he still believes in Teblows as a football player. I get the nice guy thing, weird but if that's your flavor of idol ok. But as a NFL player there is so much obvious proof of why this guy plateaud in school.

Will this place still have Darnold believers in 5 years? 'He isn't even 30 yet, it could start clicking'. Anyways

If the media would have left The Golden Calf of Bristol alone I do think he could of been a backup QB in this league.  Maybe a gadget red zone insertion here or there.

The Skip Bayless type folks that just lied about The Golden Calf of Bristol and made him miserable to bring on your roster…killed what would have been a solid Clipboard Jesus career (minus the hair but plus the Jesus swag).

Yeah he had a place in the NFL it was just not a starter.

Both would be in the league if it wasn't for off-field stuff and ego. Kap is definitely backup/marginal starter caliber. Denver offered him a contract reflecting of that. He was insulted by it. The Golden Calf of Bristol could definitely be a gadget player for someone. Sean Payton offered him the initial shot at what would ultimately become Taysom Hill's role. He had no interest. He only wanted to be a pure QB. Then he finally took a shot at TE for his old college coach when he was past his athletic prime.

The folks who want to pretend like it's all conspiracy theory about these guys for political/social reasons have to ignore a lot of reality.

100%. The Golden Calf of Bristol is especially idiotic for thinking low A ball was somehow a better career path than FB/TE/Gadget. Kaepernick played his cards perfectly though, IMO – his brand / relevance is 100x more valuable as a "martyr" being excluded from the league, rather than as a decent backup.

Not that it should make a difference, but Cam seems like a strong Christian to me.

Although it's my humble opinion that what religion you are, or what politics you believe shouldn't matter in sports.

I could care less if your a socialist or a trump supporter as long as you do your job on the field, a good teammate, and help sell the brand.

    • You literally did it right there and didn't even remember it. Sorry long Friday.
    • TMac to finish up Feels good after pads came on. Physicality is a little different, playstyle is a little different. Refs let the players play, so he has to earn his stripes to get calls and just has to be better playing through contact. Focusing on staying confident and listening to coaches. Not much has changed for him, still trying to be his authentic self. Was asked about boxing practice he was seen doing. He's done that since he was a kid because his dad was a boxer and taught his siblings. Was the youngest and got beat up the most, but now he's the fourth of sixth children. Boxing helps with his cardio and being reactive with his hands to the ball + DB. Admits to struggling the first couple of days, hats off to the DB corps for making him better every single day but had his best day on Wednesday. Even the best get got. Just have to remain confident in preparation and abilities. Confidence will take you only so far, and that's where his resilience plays a factor. XL is authentic and great to have in the room. Can rely on him to be the same guy every day. They make each other better. Everybody feeds off of each other and when one person wins they all win. Happy to be a part of the receiver room. Was asked about how he was laughing harder than everybody else at XL getting his feet in the water off the back of the boat: "Man he needs to be stopped bro... He can't be serious but he was serious. It's all good." Playing against the increased amount of press he's facing in practice is helping him get more physical. His job is to catch the ball, so if it touches his hand he has to come down with it. Only catches with one hand if he needs to, but that gives the QB a bigger catch radius. Had a pregame routine where he did a 360 one-handed catch, but doesn't do it anymore. Working on being a pro: Getting into the facility early and getting treatment, eating better, etc. Just wants to win re: rookie goals. Anything he can do to help the team win. "I'm looking for to the season man and keep pounding."
    • DJ Wonnum up next Felt the defense came out ready to work at all levels and took over practice. New standard around here. Young guys have to know they're coming in to work. Last year was not the standard. Nic and Princely are fun. Different personalities but loves what they bring to the room. Sky is the limit for them. Nic sits next to Wonnum, Princeley sits next to Jones II. Allows them to be better mentors. Feels great and ready to go Incoom's athleticism allows him to bend and get low even to compensate for not being the biggest guy. Can set the edge. EDGE guys are helped when the ILBs can get home because it allows them to be a little more free while still in scheme. DB being back means his dominance is back. Can set the edge from the 3 or wherever he's at to make the runs bounce to the EDGE guys. Winning mentality and standard this year. Championship level from practice to how you live off of the field. Accept greatness and excellence with guys wanting to come to work every day. Not settling for anything less. Been in guys' shoes that are fighting for roster spots so he knows how to address them. Remembers not knowing what's next, especially as a rookie. Have a clear mind and ask the older guys a lot of questions. Has a good relationship already with Pat Jones II due to knowing each other and talking football all of the time. Can make hand gestures and know immediately what to adjust. Taking care of his body and excited to start the season. Getting it acclimated to football again by being able to tackle and bring players to the ground. Didn't know they were playing live tomorrow. Don't tell me it'll be "thud." Browns next week will allow them to hit somebody else and get a feel of what a different team is doing. Also allows the team to see where they're at on offense and defense. Ready to play football. Not worried about the QB matchup for Cleveland, going to play hard regardless of who is back there.
