Matt Rhule a hot name for open college coaching jobs at Oklahoma, Notre Dame

So the Rhule and Brady to Oklahoma smoke is getting really thick. I wonder where that leaves us on an interim basis for the last 5 games? Rhule would obviously be gone as would Brady as he is half the attraction there with his connection to Caleb Williams and we know Rhule is not going anywhere without Phil Snow along for the ride.

Not that it really matters, but the HC and both coordinators leaving with this much season left has to be unprecedented, right?

Would just be Rhule one of the others would take over until they were terminated at season end then they would join, I suppose.

I guess if all 3 left, Blackburn or Holcombe?

For a college coaching gig......absolutely uncharted territory. I would be intrigued to see the optics/perception of our franchise if this happens. Truthfully, I think it would reflect poorly on Rhule, but can't look good for an NFL franchise with a LOADED owner that backed up the Brinks truck for you loses their HC 1.5 years into his gig.

I'm sure it would be pitched as a mutual parting of ways or something where both sides don't look terrible like they did with the Petrino/Falcons situation. Good PR can spin it so it's not a complete mess and I have seen absolutely nothing that the fan base would be in any way upset if Rhule did leave. Most would be thrilled and at worst people would be kind of indifferent.

Take it with a grain of salt, but I know an OU insider who knew their coach was leaving before he did. They mainly want Brady, but if Rhule being there is what it takes to get him they'll do it - and the boosters are more than happy to cover any payout that results from Rhule leaving.

I'll toss in a couple bucks if it helps.

My source lives on the west coast now and the other one died. The half reliable ones I have now say Rhule is staying no matter what in 2022 unless he loses out.

That's a possibility.

Can NCAA teams even recruit active HCs until the season is over?

Even then they are under a contract? Don’t they have to request an interview?

The NFL doesn't have any authority over the NCAA.

Not sure he'd take Blackburn, but it's also not all that likely the next coach would retain him.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
