Panthers taking offers for Cmac in the off-season

oh good.  another opportunity to bash CMC.

Recall, when he signed the extension he had just wrapped up a year with 1400 yard rushing, 1000 yard receiving and 19 TDs.  Dude had played 3 years and never missed a game.  He was due to make less than $3m in 2020.

So the panthers extended him.  his cap hits were nearly identical to the hits that would have occurred had they not extended him and just picked up the 5th year option.  This way he got some cash in his pocket and we said thank you to our stud RB.

The guy played in 48 out of 48 games going into 2020.  He was arguably the most valuable player in the NFL.  He was only 24.  He easily had 4-6 more productive years ahead.  It was a no-brainer.  Unfortunately the time machine was down that day and no one saw the injuries coming.  Realistically, he would have played in a bunch of the games he missed over the last 2 years, but why bother.

Unless there is a bombshell offer, he will be around at least 1 more year.  Barring injury, he will put up 1500 all purpose yards and 8-10 TDs behind a rebuilt line.  When healthy, he is a top 5 RB.

Another dismal injury plagued year will result in cutting bait.  New regime will enter and look to rebuild.  The dead cap hit will only be 5.7m in '23 and '24 with 12m saved in '23.  Hope it doesn't come to that because I love to watch the dude play.

My 2 cents.

It's certainly not a lock but he is our best rout runner and he is our best pass catcher. There is a higher chance he could become a WR vs likelihood of not getting IRed again as a RB. If we are not using him as a runner out of the backfield we lose the same advantage when other teams know we wont vs knowing he will get hurt when running.

It's not a lock by any means, just a shot to salvage his contract and career. The guy is done as a RB at this point.

He would still need some carries in that scenario, for sure. Given the nature of his injuries I’m not certain that any position that requires running and being tackled will keep him safe.

Lmao that’s not why they paid him. Quite honestly they should’ve just let him hold out. No one was calling to trade for him then, why would they trade for him now?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm pretty much 100% certain that he's not. I was only stating that this isn't surprising to me considering the position that they find themselves in. I have exactly zero expectation of them doing anything but making things worse.

I agree.  Sad it's probably true.

CMC has a 2022 DEAD CAP hit of -- 26M to keep it simple -- 14M is his salary in 2022 -- so you'd be looking at a NEGATIVE cap hit of 12M aka you nerfed your own cap by doing this. (via Spotrac)

Only way for something like this to work is to take ''less'' value in a trade so the receiving team will take on more of his GUARANTEED SALARY to lessen the dead cap hit -- I see little market for a HB that hasn't played a full season since 2019, and has the price tag he does.

The money doesn't make sense -- we have DJ / Reddick / Jackson / Gilmore all to consider for extensions, and we need to add OL -- we can't afford to create negative cap space. We also owe Darnold 18.8M -- if we trade anything, we likely trade our 6th overall pick to acquire more draft stock because that will be the best way to add quality OL at a premium to the roster.

No one will go for this.

Plenty of us saw what was about to happen with injuries people like you weren’t paying attention.

This will never happen but if rhule is kept id cut cmc if no one will trade for him and take the dead cap hit this year. It’ll be brutal and we won’t field a good team but we aren’t anyway so I’d be done with it. Start fresh with a new staff and high picks and plenty of cap.

Any play we can get out of his contract is a positive at this point. I just can't see keeping him at RB as anything other than just rushing him to IR. Might as well make his position IR officially and just carry 3 other RBs we plan on using.

Personally there’s no reason to trade him unless he is quitely asking for a trade… we will not recoup a lot of asset or assets in return… just keep him and you saw the offense was night and day with him in the field.. if he gets traded his contract will be a way less then we paying him … he will be on a steal of a contract post trade…. Keep him atleast one more year unless we get a good offer for him. Try to build up some trade value

not worried about dead cap .. we will have a lot of dead money coming off the books next season .. we will have plenty of a cap either way

    • Sorry to be that guy, but this is a fun story that doesn't really hold up to logic The Bills would never have traded with the Patriots there to let them get their guy, not for a division opponent.  Even if the Bills traded it to someone else, either they or we would have taken him before the Patriots could anyways, thus the Patriots never stood a chance to get thier guy, so the Bills didn't screw them over. Just sayin
