REPORT: Panthers still interested in Baker as well (Same old song and dance)

Report:

Three weeks after the draft, quarterback Baker Mayfield continues to be on the Cleveland roster. That likely will continue to be the case.

Jeff Howe of TheAthletic.com reports that a “holding pattern” exists as to Mayfield.

Howe reports that the Panthers and Seahawks remain interested in Mayfield. The problem continues to be the amount of Mayfield’s $18.8 million guaranteed salary that Cleveland will pay, and that his next employer will carry.

Mayfield can play, if heathy. He’s currently not healthy, which reduces the urgency to resolve things.

Then there’s the Deshaun Watson situation. If Watson ends up being suspended for a significant piece of the season, the Browns may need Mayfield. Before they can do that, however, they need to rebuild the bridge to Baker.

That may be impossible. But that’s what the Browns should be doing. Both sides ultimately may need each other, and Mayfield’s best option could be to play for the Browns instead of the Seahawks or the Panthers. Mayfield may need some persuading to get there.

People wanted to complain about being ranked 32 yet we keep getting the leftover crap from other teams that did anything to get away from them. Sure, come on down and get Rhule fired while being booed lol.

Welcome new Sam, doesn't matter who is better because you are not good enough.

If we swapped Darnold for Mayfield, they take Darnold's cap hit while we take Mayfield's, it would essentially be a wash for us contract wise.  And Mayfield is better than Darnold.  By how much is debatable, but he is better.  So I basically don't care if they do it, as long as we don't give up much else.

This would be the ideal scenario.  Dislike for Mayfield aside, he is probably a below average/marginal starter in this league(with lots of limitations).  Unfortunately for us, Sam is not.

We're stupid if we trade for him.  He is either going to be the starter day one since Watson is out or they are going to cut him sooner or later.   Either way the BROWNS are going to pay him.  Just sit back and wait.

If they cut him, give him a one year deal and let him take his chances that he'll put Carolina on his back and have a great season.  Someone signs him in 2023.

It just doesn't make sense to trade for him with one exception and that's a one for one swap with Darnold.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
