What is this 'Matt Rhule tends to have a big jump in Year 3' BS that continues to perpetuate? His biggest jumps have come from years 1 to 2 (while at Baylor), and otherwise his team continued on whatever trajectory they were on from Year 1 to Year 2.

Carolina had zero improvement from Years 1 to 2, and even looked markedly worse on the field.

If there is some magical big jump this year then cool, but it is not following a trend like everyone seems to think it is - Rhule already bucked that trend by failing as hard as the team did last year.

That’s not true. Last years team did improve.

But the most important position became the worst in the NFL.

Bill Simmons picks the Panthers to make the playoffs. His points include Baker being a big upgrade, McCaffrey is a top rb if healthy, Matt Rhule teams tend to have a big jump in year 3, we have a talented core on defense, McAdoo should be an upgrade over Brady and we have an exploitable schedule (Cleveland with Jacoby, Arizona without Hopkins).

The guy on the other end of the debate is skeptical mainly cause Matt Rhule hasn't shown he is an NFL caliber coach, which is fair to say the least. Nice debate though. Hope you enjoy.

We’re gonna lose Sunday to the Browns

The other guy is Kevin Clark. He sounds like a Huddler.

Our passing defense improved (from 15th to 4th avg yards per game) but the run defense based on avg yards per game was worse we dropped from 12th to 13th per espn.com numbers. Based on what little we did to improve our dline after seeing talent walk it would be a tall order to make a jump there if anything a step back is likely.

The QB position did not improve last year. The OL position did not improve last year. The WR position did not improve last year (and Robby/Robbie regressed hard). The DT position did not improve last year (and Derek Brown found himself benched at one point). DE/edge/pass rush improved primarily because of Reddick, who is now gone. CB arguably improved but Gilmore brought his skills and is gone, and Jackson replicated his 2020 season at best. Scheming and strategy sure as hell didn't improve last year.

No, the team did not improve on the whole last year. And while the new season is about to begin and make last season mostly irrelevant, it remains primary evidence against the whole '3rd year jump' commentary nonsense.

Clark appears to be more open  than some around here to the possibility of a Panthers playoff birth:

You've made a incredibly compelling case I'm almost on board if not for the fact that  my
team like that is the Dolphins.

It's nice seeing some positive press for a change, but it is Bill Simmons. He should stick to basketball and sucking up to the Celtics.

    • Actually,  what lines up with your ideas he is too short or small to be successful.? His passing completions or total yards? Bryce is going into his 13th game with a legitimate offense and good offensive coach. And during that time he went from the worst qb in the league to top 10 by the end of the year based on game production against a number of playoff teams.  And he showed that he can lead comebacks and score under pressure at the end of the game and overtime. He stayed cool under pressure and was one of the best against the blitz by year end. That is the holy grail in quarterback traits and Bryce went from crumbling under pressure to stepping up and delivering strikes down the field. Maybe it is me but those kind of qualities far out weigh a few inches or a few pounds here and there.  Everyone holds their breath when he get whacked by a 350lb linemen and exhales when he magically arises seemingly unfazed. And yeah when he is backpedalling and tosses one out there as if it is random only to float into Thielen's hand it seems just luck. Kind of like Russell Wilson years ago. But I think you are letting your past rob you of enjoying what I hope is happening which is the development of our franchise guy. And for the record I am all about bringing in competition  at all positions including quarterback.
