  • One of Bum Phillips’ most famous quotes was in 1978. He was asked about coaching against Shula, and Phillips said, “He can take his’n and beat your’n and take your’n and beat his’n.” In other words, Shula was such a great coach he could beat you with his players, and he could beat you with your players.

After seeing how hard the defense has played to keep us in this game; and how hard Christian and the crew has  played on offense, I have no doubt that there are coaches in the NFL  who could win right now with this current roster.

We aren’t a championship team as currently constructed, but the Panthers are not a team opponents just roll over even with Rhule at the helm.  San Francisco is clearly better than us, but at no point in this game have I felt we were just overmatched. Let this sink in. If not for the missed field and missed 2 pt conversion attempt, we’d be down by one score to a team that manhandled the world champion LA Rams (who could protect Stafford or even score a touchdown) less than a week ago.

If we had the right coach/coaches this team could be a problem for NFC in the immediate future.

    • He has attempted 8 shootout goals in his NHL career and made 1. He is among our worst SO guys on the entire roster in terms of career stats.
    • Against Miami, the Panthers were behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter facing a 4th - 5. Young completed a 21 yard pass and they went on to score 7 on that drive. Then in the 4th, down by 4, they faced a 4th - 5 and again, he completed a 17 yard pass and they went onto score a TD for the win. He also accounted for 2 of the 3 TD's.  As I said, he got them in that mess and no doubt, Rico gets credit as well, but missing on either of those 4th down conversions hands the ball over and results in 1 or 2 less TD's giving them a loss. As you said though, that's just a small quibble. The real question is how does the FO see it?  I am guessing they see it as something to build on. I think most peope here see it as a total loss and fully expect the FO to see it that way as well. Time will tell.
    • Kochetkov is just too streaky. TBD if Freddie is doing that too. Freddie is the more reliable goalie over his career. The Bussi kid looks like he could be a solid #2 eventually.  Just need to figure out the #1 guy. Same as almost every year. It's not talent, it's consistency and being able to step up in the playoffs.
