FMIA: Tanking shouldn’t be a dirty word

I wonder how many people around here are gonna be happy when we start next year with nothing but JAG QBs again. I’ve noticed a lot of these ant-tank accounts are new anyways and only post when this situation arises (ie the 2020 Washington game). How’d that work for us?

Look at the Jets now. From bottom-dweller to 5-2 now.

For Jacksonville, Lawrence seems to getting better and will no doubt be a difference-maker for them.

No matter how much talent we get in other positions our ceiling would be what the 49ers currently are: 3-4 and MEDIOCRE

Jets are winning despite their QB’s.

Whereas Increasing your draft return by trading away prized assets is not directly causing you to lose. Especially if you have a great core of youth you want to improve via training and instilling the right attitudes and mindsets for the future.

This is my definition of 'tanking'.  Nobody is asking the coach or players to throw the games, but stop with the euphoria about winning the NFC south and going to the playoffs.  It's stupid and unrealistic.  I want to see our players develop, work hard, show improvement and ultimately lose meaningless games so they can actually win meaningful games next year and beyond.

Carolina: Great tanking trade.

The Panthers are gold right now. Even with the win over Tampa Bay Sunday (I bet David Tepper was very quietly perturbed), they enter the last 10 games of the season 2-5, with the third overall pick in the 2023 draft. That’s almost certain to fluctuate in the next 10 weeks. But this is a draft stocked with quarterbacks. None is perfect, though. The Panthers may well get to have their pick of Bryce Young (Alabama), C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) or Will Levis (Kentucky), wherever they pick. After trading their best player, and with a mishmash at quarterback, it’ll be a surprise if they don’t pick in the top five next April, with some draft capital to move up if need be. They already had picks near the top of the first, second and fourth rounds, and this deal adds the Niner picks in rounds two, three and four.

Young, Stroud and Levis might not be Burrow, Herbert and Allen from recent top tens, but one or two will get hot in February and March. If it happens that the Panthers need to trade up a slot or two for the passer of their dreams, five picks in the second, third and fourth rounds will be good chips to play.

Credit GM Scott Fitterer for playing poker correctly. Even though the Rams were involved, L.A. never got close to the Niners’ offer of three picks in the top 130 (estimate) of next year’s draft plus a 2025 pick in round five. Fitterer got more for a back with McCaffrey’s injury history than he had a right to hope for.

Re tanking: It shouldn’t be a dirty word. If I’m a Panthers’ fan, I want my team to tank so as to gain the highest possible pick next year. What difference does it make if Carolina is 3-14 or 6-11? Winning five or six would mean the Panthers likely wouldn’t have their pick of the litter at quarterback, and that’s all that should matter to the franchise in the next six months

KEY WORDS PANTHER FAN

You're not a player.  Players don't play to lose.  Everyone in that locker room is going to fight to get better.  We'll face the draft after the season and go from there.

These are poor examples for your argument. There are rumors that the jets may switch back to Flacco bc Wilson just looks lost on the field, and it’s true.

lawrence has regressed since weeks 1 and 2. He doesn’t look like a top overall pick / generational quarterback right now.

That’s not tanking. Tanking is trading CMC for picks. It’s not telling the current team not to try. Sometimes you hit a Winston or Murray or week 7 Bucs.

Seems we did ok without him.  Sometimes you get addition thru subtraction.

I loved CMC and hated to see him go but our offense looked the best we've every had this season.

Due to tanking lol. They have been building up some good assets from trades like Jamal Adams and cough, cough, Sam Darnold. If Wilson improves they’ll have a really good team. Not sure he can but they’ve got a good team around him.

Not to be a debbie downer but the majority of the jets starters weren’t drafted by the jets.

they aren’t a good team to use for a tanking example bc they historically have been a bad drafting football team.

Yes yet we’re being attacked for being Panthers fans who want us to get a high draft pick and rebuild properly.

If teams want to focus on the future, they trade away high salary veteran pieces for drafts picks like we are doing.  If our young core can play their asses off and secure a few wins then that's great.  If we strip our team down of it's vets and are still competitive than a middle first round QB will fit in nicely.

I'm trying to figure out what we are doing at HC.  Tepper wants a young offensive minded HC, but if Wilks keeps us competitive do you not give him a shot?  It's still early and a lot of football left to be played.

Tanking is rarely ever an on the field thing, it's a front office thing. Coaches and players want to win. Now the FO can set up the situation to where the entire organization knows what the deal is. Even then, players still have contract performance bonuses to achieve and coaches want to show they can still perform well with a shitty hand.

tanking = cheating, it really is that simple.

Using the tanking theory you can justify/rationalize a lot of things.  Hey, why not pass out PED's?  It's only against the rules if you get caught, right?

I would rather root for a 5 win team with integrity than a playoff contender with no integrity.  JMO.

signed, not a new fan.

Mirrors what Coach Wilkes said about PJ.  Gonna be hard to keep him off the field.
