I still say we trade up and take a shot at a top QB prospect.

Dumpster diving can only get you so far

If we end up at 3 and Detroit and Houston are in front of us, as they are now, I doubt they will trade down. They'll take Stroud and Young at 1 and 2.

If we are further down the board, which maybe the situation, and somehow one of those two slips down to 3 and we try to trade up it is most likely going to cost us next year's 1st.   I don't think they'll do it.

Best bet is to take another position of need and maybe deal the two 2nd rounders for a late 1st rounder if someone like Hooker drops.

Whatever we do we don't want to reach for a QB that may or may not be better than who we currently have on the roster.

Totally agree.  Reaching for QB just because we need a QB is really bad idea.  Not only do we reach but we possibly pass up on a position of need.

I'm agree too. If we think Stroud, Levis, Young is not our guy, pass on him. We have other option next year for our QB. We can draft a guy in the second, we can sign Minshew during the offseason and wait & see. This QB Class Draft is deep and good but probably no franchise QB like Mahomes/Allen/Rodgers/Herbert/Burrow/Lamar etc. Next year I have more confidence in Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Quinn Ewers. But in 18 months, many things can change.

I have actually watched a couple of games this college football season and seen some interesting prospects other than the Young/Stroud/Levis/Hooker/Richardson talks.   I expect to see risers and fallers soon.

If we think that a QB is all that and a bag of chips, trade up. I haven't seen that guy in the upcoming draft yet, so I think they would need to stay where they're at and draft the BPA (and if that happens to be a QB, then great). If not, then so be it.

Don't get me wrong, I believe in taking swings, but only if the swing is worth taking. You can't just be whiffing in the first round year after year taking wild swings out of desperation; the guy has to show that franchise-level play. Otherwise we can get a vet, possibly draft a QB on day two, and look to develop Corral as well. Impatience is arguably a big part of the reason why we are here.

Fields fell, and we skipped over him, but he did fall, and with proper support and development he could turn out as the best of that draft.

Yeah, we are basically in a 1999-2017 Browns era of our own and fuging up at QB was a hallmark of that horrible stretch for them. Including multiple bad first round QB's.

We absolutely need a franchise QB. But if you don't see The Guy, don't just keep throwing darts at the board with 1st round picks.

Consequently, if you do see The Guy(or Guys), fuging trade up and get them.

When did we ever do this ?

We are in QB purgatory but we have not drafted any in the first round yet so this take sucks. We have to draft one in the first round

Yeah the last one we drafted in the first was Cam, who happens to be our last great QB. I mean why not try for that again??

He was garbage, his injury kept the myth that he's a good QB alive on the huddle though. It wasn't even rookie struggles, he looked like he belonged in the arena league or something.

Naw it's how much stock you put into his preseason. Rhule neglected to prepare him and he had tryouts for teammates so some of us don't, that's all.  If Ickey had gotten injured we'd be having the same discussion about him because a lot y'all were calling him a preseason bust too.

Spoken like someone who literally has no idea what they are talking about.

During the 1999-2017 span Cleveland drafted a total of two QB's in the first round, Tim Couch(#1 overall in 1999) and Johnny Manziel(#22 overall in 2014). But that era was marked by repeated turnover at QB. Lower round draft picks, journeymen, roster discards, etc.

If you actually expand that era(which would be somewhat fair) to include up to the present, that would net another likely bust QB in Baker Mayfield taken #1 overall in 2022.

Regardless, it has been a roughly 18-22 year span of over 20 starting QB's. That's bad.

It's also better through the first 5 years than our span has been from 2018-2022. We have started more QB's and had less team success.

So confused on this. Why is only "reaching" when it's for a QB--particularly on today's wage scales? Why the hand-wringing in favor of yet another (usually) defensive player that will be either neutralized by better competition or exhausted because his offense can't stay on the field. Carolina has no bust QBs...because they don't draft them in the first round aside from Collins and Cam. 2 1st round QBs in almost 30 years? I could see if that was because of long-term success, but it's not. It's been because "bigger needs" we're always addressed first, with the QB left as an afterthought.

I thought Weinke was a first or am I remembering wrong?

Lol I guess I was wrong. Outside of winning his first game and getting my hopes up I guess I developed a psychotic break around him

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
