So How did Norman and Darnold play?

I was working and missed the whole game unfortunately. Did Norman play okay? Was he rusty? Is he worth keeping around for next year as well to have a solid veteran presence?

Also, how did Darnold play? His stats looked pretty good but I see others saying his fumble was bad and really not giving him much credit at all. Was it one of those games where he looked decent on paper but not to the eye?

I haven't seen much praise for either so was wondering how they each looked yesterday. I hate I missed the game.

Sam Darnold was not the reason the Panthers lost. The absence of Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson are the real story.

Evans had touchdown receptions of 57, 63, and 30-yards. That was their entire offense and the Panthers would have been a playoff team with a slightly better, or healthier, secondary.

Norman barely played at all.

Darnold played well, he had some turnovers though. His interception was a good read but a bad throw. The fumble that cost the game was a blindside hit where ickey got made to look like a turnstile and Darnold had no time to throw because of it.  He got hit pretty fast on that play.

Norman only played a couple of snaps yesterday.  There was a pass thrown his way on the first one that was not close to being completed although it possibly could have been with a more accurate pass.

As for Darnold, he was not the reason the Panthers lost yesterday.  That was more on the defense, particularly CB.  Sam had a rather good day overall with the exception of one interception due to the pass being too short.  Had it been about 3 or 4 yards longer it would have probably been a TD.  He still threw for over 300 yards and 3 TDs.  He also lost a fumble on a strip sack (from Icky's side) near their own goal line but the Bucs only got a FG out of it.

Norman didn't factor in much. Darnold showed his normal self, although a better overall version. He had two back-breaking blunders that led to TO's.

Given how badly our other CB's got roasted by Evans, I am a little surprised they didn't move Norman over there at some point to try and stop Evans. But, the coaching staff has got roasted enough for that.

Darnold is who we thought he was. That has never changed, even with his improvements. Panthers QB Stockholm Syndrome is in full effect however. You will see a sizeable gaggle of posters that slobber over him with the same fervor they did when we traded for him. It's pretty pathetic.

Darnold played decent until the pressure was on him. He had a couple INTs get dropped and DJ bailed him out if several high/low throws. Our secondary was banged up and when we needed a final drive he struggled. DJ got OPI to prevent another easy INT. What I gathered is Sam can play well when there is no pressure for him to perform and the defense isn’t playing the pass. That’s ok for a backup, but the people on here thinking he is ready to be our guy next year are setting themselves up for disappointment.

Darnold solidified himself as the veteran/backup/stopgap for me. He's like a notch above Derek Anderson. He can't carry but he's an effective game manager when the pass protection holds up.

Backup/bridge on a decent contract seems perfect for how he has played. He definitely elevated his play, but showed he still struggles under pressure and when the defense knows a pass is coming. Signing him as the future QB will just set us up for more seasons like this.

Good summary.

I give Darnold props. He has eclipsed the ceiling I thought he was capable of.  But IMO it is not high enough to be the long term answer for a franchise.

    • You literally did it right there and didn't even remember it. Sorry long Friday.
    • TMac to finish up Feels good after pads came on. Physicality is a little different, playstyle is a little different. Refs let the players play, so he has to earn his stripes to get calls and just has to be better playing through contact. Focusing on staying confident and listening to coaches. Not much has changed for him, still trying to be his authentic self. Was asked about boxing practice he was seen doing. He's done that since he was a kid because his dad was a boxer and taught his siblings. Was the youngest and got beat up the most, but now he's the fourth of sixth children. Boxing helps with his cardio and being reactive with his hands to the ball + DB. Admits to struggling the first couple of days, hats off to the DB corps for making him better every single day but had his best day on Wednesday. Even the best get got. Just have to remain confident in preparation and abilities. Confidence will take you only so far, and that's where his resilience plays a factor. XL is authentic and great to have in the room. Can rely on him to be the same guy every day. They make each other better. Everybody feeds off of each other and when one person wins they all win. Happy to be a part of the receiver room. Was asked about how he was laughing harder than everybody else at XL getting his feet in the water off the back of the boat: "Man he needs to be stopped bro... He can't be serious but he was serious. It's all good." Playing against the increased amount of press he's facing in practice is helping him get more physical. His job is to catch the ball, so if it touches his hand he has to come down with it. Only catches with one hand if he needs to, but that gives the QB a bigger catch radius. Had a pregame routine where he did a 360 one-handed catch, but doesn't do it anymore. Working on being a pro: Getting into the facility early and getting treatment, eating better, etc. Just wants to win re: rookie goals. Anything he can do to help the team win. "I'm looking for to the season man and keep pounding."
    • DJ Wonnum up next Felt the defense came out ready to work at all levels and took over practice. New standard around here. Young guys have to know they're coming in to work. Last year was not the standard. Nic and Princely are fun. Different personalities but loves what they bring to the room. Sky is the limit for them. Nic sits next to Wonnum, Princeley sits next to Jones II. Allows them to be better mentors. Feels great and ready to go Incoom's athleticism allows him to bend and get low even to compensate for not being the biggest guy. Can set the edge. EDGE guys are helped when the ILBs can get home because it allows them to be a little more free while still in scheme. DB being back means his dominance is back. Can set the edge from the 3 or wherever he's at to make the runs bounce to the EDGE guys. Winning mentality and standard this year. Championship level from practice to how you live off of the field. Accept greatness and excellence with guys wanting to come to work every day. Not settling for anything less. Been in guys' shoes that are fighting for roster spots so he knows how to address them. Remembers not knowing what's next, especially as a rookie. Have a clear mind and ask the older guys a lot of questions. Has a good relationship already with Pat Jones II due to knowing each other and talking football all of the time. Can make hand gestures and know immediately what to adjust. Taking care of his body and excited to start the season. Getting it acclimated to football again by being able to tackle and bring players to the ground. Didn't know they were playing live tomorrow. Don't tell me it'll be "thud." Browns next week will allow them to hit somebody else and get a feel of what a different team is doing. Also allows the team to see where they're at on offense and defense. Ready to play football. Not worried about the QB matchup for Cleveland, going to play hard regardless of who is back there.
