Jim Harbaugh flirting with the Carolina Panthers UPDATE

John U. Bacon, author of Overtime: Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines at the Crossroads of College Football, joined The Fan Upstate’s Offsides With Marc Ryan earlier this week.

When asked how he thinks Harbaugh would have his job preferences ranked, Bacon went with the following order:

Carolina Panthers

Indianapolis Colts

Denver Broncos

“I’d say the three—the sanest and the best opportunity—Jim would care about that. To get out of the hole as fast as possible, in two or three years, would be Carolina. And keep in mind also, who’s looking for coaches? Not the guys winning the Super Bowls. So, that’s never really an option. So, Carolina, Indianapolis, Denver—I’ve not yet heard of anybody else making a serious run at Jim outside of those three.”

I think his ranking is spot-on given those three jobs.  And I by no means think we are as close to being good as some on this board.

Both the Colts and Broncos went all-in for a veteran QB and instant success this year, and it turned out badly.  I think the Colts can actually save money by dumping Ryan after this year, but the the Broncos all-in has at least two more years before they can cut ties without taking a cap hit that Congress would be proud of.

So, none of us has a QB that will get us to the next level, but we (for once) don't have a bill for a QB that would attached to our need.

If trends count, ours at least appears to be slightly up right now.  The Colts and Broncos have been big disappointments this year.

How bad would it suck if the Colts landed Harbaugh, then signed Darnold, and proceeded to make the playoffs in 2023 while we miss out?

    • Don’t get me wrong, I love Koochie. I think he could be a star. But I’m not convinced Rod trusts him. And I realize my post was confusing. I meant based on the reports of swapping Necas for Ullmark or another goalie. If we’re going to trade for a goalie I would rather use draft picks instead of lowering the value of Necas.
    • You can make a decent case that most of the starters are at-least average. But depth-wise, its awful, maybe the worst in the NFL.  The only reason they could be a playoff team, is the awful NFC south and its collection of bad QBs and coaching staffs. That changed big time when cousins and Morris arrived to ATL. Now it would take a setback to cousins, in which he currently ready to play given all the stem cells and peptides stuff he has.  In past years there was always some elite talent leftd on the 7 win rosters. Like many know theres just dbrown and a huge ? in horn. If hunt was elite, phins would have tagged him. There's no Thomas Davis, Luke, Cam, Olsen, peppers, kalil, beason, gross, Jenkins, Smitty etc on the team. Brown is great and all, but sacks and pressure wise, he's not game changing. Panthers lack difference makers, young ones. You could make a weak case for clowney, but that ravens D is stacked.  Us fans just need to hope Dan Morgan can collect more young difference maker in the next 2-3 years. If Bryce isn't that guy, 4 years before this team can sniff the playoffs.  Honestly the panthers are due some luck as well.
    • The fact that Smitty TD and all of our other black players love JR, it was probably another made up cancel culture BS to go along with the times.
