2023 NFL Mock Draft: Marino 5.0

Panthers@2x.png

1. Carolina Panthers (via CHI)*

Will Levis QB, Kentucky

TRADE
CAR gets: 2023 1st-round pick (No. 1)
CHI gets: 2023 1st-round pick (No. 9), 2023 2nd-round pick (No. 40), 2024 1st-round pick, 2024 3rd-round pick, 2025 1st-round pick

In Frank Reich, the Carolina Panthers hired the first offensive-minded head coach in franchise history. And after years of choosing to not participate in drafting a first-round quarterback despite having chances to do it, Carolina could go all-in to get their guy. There are plenty of rumblings that guy is Will Levis, who has all the physical makeup and intangibles to be a franchise quarterback. A coach like Reich could unlock his potential and set the course for the future.

I would be seriously worried giving up this kinda haul for Stoud or Young but for Levis it’s near insanity

I think people automatically assuming the Bears will trade the #1 pick.

Colin Cowherd said he had a source within the Bears front office and said the new GM isn't in love with Justin Fields and they will look to trade him.

You just don't say that live on air if it doesn't have some truth to it. I think they could go QB and trade Fields for assets. Keep in mind the new GM didn't draft Justin Fields.

Warren Sapp has been saying the same thing. We may not know until draft night.

1) Carolina Panthers (from CHI): Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

Trade Compensation: Carolina Panthers receive pick No. 1; Chicago Bears receive 9, 39, 93, 2024 first-round pick, and 2024 third-round pick.

As it stands, the Carolina Panthers do not have a definitive answer at quarterback. Matt Corral did not feature as a rookie, and pinning the success of a new regime to the third-round selection from last year would be a bold start to the Frank Reich era.

The Panthers make a big move to go and get the top QB option available in Bryce Young. They have good pieces scattered across the roster and can afford to pay up to go from ninth to first in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft.

This would be a solid landing spot for Young’s fantasy value. The offensive line isn’t perfect, but it has some good pieces. In DJ Moore, Terrace Marshall Jr., Shi Smith, Laviska Shenault, and Tommy Tremble, there are at least some capable weapons. Young may not deliver huge production as a rookie, but he has a QB-friendly head coach, and the Panthers could add some pieces in free agency.

Maybe the Reich era's different but this organization is too leaky to keep a move like this under wraps. There hasn't been a hint of us looking Bryce's way.

I understand that maybe some people in the organization might be on Levis.....I get that(not agree but I get it).

But making that kind of trade to get him? Bruh.....start at the top and start firing until you reach the field.

Give them two 2nd round picks. No way you hand a conference opponent the 1st pick of the draft, the number 9 pick of the draft, and however much other draft stuff they have.

Panthers need to focus on the core of talent on the team. We aren't a rookie QB away from being competitive so why would we trade everything this year and next year for one? So we get a QB and can't support them until Year 4 when, if they aren't ruined, we have to re-sign them to a cap constraining deal.

The only way that works is if you land Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson type dudes. The closest I see in this draft to someone who could reach that ceiling is Stroud and maybe Richardson.

Young and Levis may end up being good, but I just don't see them as great options. People are making a lot of excuses for Levis and the only reason why is because he has a rocket launcher for an arm. If Bryce Young was 4 inches and 30 lbs heavier, he may be a great option. Hell, he still may be a great option but even his comps in Russell Wilson and Drew Brees required league leading defenses.

So I think we need to build out the defense first, fill in the dime-a-dozen type positions on the offense second, then find the QB. I also still believe it's foolish to sleep on Darnold and Corral paired with Reich.

During the lead up to the draft folks were reporting live on air that Fields wasn’t a first in last out kind of guy.

It was false then and then it’s been demonstrably false since. The new GM Ryan Poles already declared Justin Fields the 2023 starter.

When asked if Fields was the 2023 starter he literally said yeah. Later he was asked if they would consider a QB at 1. He said he’d have to be blown away.

It’s literally him trying to not lose value on the #1 pick so they can trade it.

Also, Warren Sapp has 0 connections to the Bears.

The Bears would be trading away Fields and going with a much less mobile CJ Stroud? A much undersized Young? Two project QBs in Levis and Richardson who have never been as accurate as Fields in college?

It makes no sense.

I can't believe you guys take these mock drafts seriously.

Mock drafts are only somewhat believable once the evaluation periods gets going in full bore(usually post-Combine). Then all the scouts and FO types start leaking info or the interest about specific players becomes more obvious so that the mock drafters can be even remotely accurate.

    • Yeah, if we could make it work, you sign him. All this talk about being a just above average QB is crazy. Dak is a top 10 QB, and his stats prove it. Give him a line and weapons, which we presumably have, and he'll be very good. I'm not going to ding a guy just because he's playing behind a good line and has a good wide receiver (as Dallas does). Dak is highly productive, and gives his team a good look every year.
    • I think Prescott is overrated as well. He is a lot better than anything we have. But it is so much money, I’d just steer clear.  I go withg what Frankw was saying, we need to keep plucking guys with potential from the draft board and cut down lists and one will hit.
