Brian Burns Extension Up Next

With most of everything done for the upcoming FA only one more elephant in the room remains. Brian Burns contract extension. Everything this previous season, where we turned down 2 first round picks in order to retain Burns, and this offseason (shipping DJ Moore instead of BB) Indicates he is about to sign a massive contract extension sooner rather than later. There don't remain many roster moves needed prior to free agency, such as a potential Pat Elflein's cut (creates $2.8M in cap space), and a potential D-Jax restructure (creates $9.5M! in cap space), Brian Burns extension remains the next most impactful (potentially $5M to $7M in cap savings) in terms of creating space before free agency starts.

What do you guys think BB's contract is going to be?

I bet they are waiting to cut Pat if we are able to re sign Bozeman. If not we have him as insurance. Idk how I feel about restructuring Jackson but if they have a good target for our new rookie franchise QB that they would like to get in FA such as Shultz or another WR I say go for it

Eww. I like Burns but he has not shown to be anywhere near worth that much.

Ascending 24 year old DE who is in the top 10 in total sacks over the last 3 years coming off his best season is going to get "Top Paid DE" money. He wont be the top paid DE for long though, next guy up will get his and so on. Cap goes up every year which increases how much players are gonna make.

I think we are unable to get this deal done this offseason and he gets tagged next offseason.

I imagine there is a big gap(this is oure speculation, FWIW) between what we want to pay versus what we made his value by turning down that monster trade deal.

Based on that, his agent has every right to ask to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL.

Only reason to do it now is if he takes less based on current actual value.  If he is going to demand top 5 money (which he’s not worth), just wait till Next season and tag him.

He’ll got top 5 money. In a correction to the OP we got an offer of two firsts and pick 36 in this draft. You can’t turn that down and get him for anything less than top edge money. With the Rams dumping Ramsey for a 3rd, those picks would have been worth a lot and still had his $25-30M a year cap space for 2 high priced FAs.

    • To me, this seems like they feel they aren't going to be competitive. I can't help but go back to Bryce. Good guy, but he doesn't inspire people to give it their all. He isn't a "leader" that people look to. There is no Smith, Delhomme, Kuechly, Cam, etc. coming in that door.  It has to be Bryce, but biologically speaking, how often is the shortest man in the room going to command the kind of respect that will drive people? It just isn't. That isn't how we are wired. That isn't how any living animal on Earth today is wired.  I just follow the science guys.
    • Vick's issue with Reid was that he couldn't take a hit, and he wouldn't go down. Otherwise he was pretty good much of the time.  Mahomes has a system that works. Mahomes doesn't become Mahomes elsewhere because not everyone can extract 125% of the ability of a specific player like Reid can. Kevin O'Connell is beginning to look like he has that ability as well but I'll need to see how he does with his Redshirt Freshman.  I also wonder how much of their playoff issue last year was related to the offense as a whole and not just Darnold. Fans don't really dive into the "why" things happen, they just see the what and complain about it.
