Breer has a lot more info here than just "I think the Panthers take Bryce Young".

Carolina war-room was definitely briefed not to say a word on who they're going for.  I'm sure all staff are under NDAs. The only info leaking is what they want to leak. If it's truly anything actually leaking.

It seems like every year we start really hearing about who the Panthers want a couple of weeks or maybe a month beforehand, and it turns out to be the guy we take or the guy we wanted but was picked before us. I remember this happening in regards to Jon Beason, Jonathan Stewart, Cam Newton, Kelvin Benjamin, Shaq Thompson, Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Jaycee Horn, CJ Henderson (got overruled, but the interest was real enough to trade for him later), Ickey was the gem for them last year and they were so stunned to see him available. It just doesn't seem like there has been a lot of real "smokescreens." Usually the intel that leaks is pretty reliable. This usually leads to the fan base interpreting the leak as fact or fiction, usually based on whether or not the fan likes the guy that gains steam. If they do: "it's happening!" if they don't: "smokescreen to trick other teams. Totally."

I remember being baffled by Jonathan Stewart after drafting Deangelo and dismissed it as absurd, but it was legit. I remember thinking the Cam Newton steam seemed inflated and really remember being pissed it was real (I was wrong guys, I admit it. Cam was a great pick). But history shows, the name that seems to become associated with the team more and more, ends up being the guy. Draft pundits have pretty much nailed our picks in recent years.

I felt the same way the next year when we drafted Luke… Right after signing Beason. It’s still a running joke between my brother and I when we make a pick I don’t like I say, “I haven’t hated a pick this much since Luke!” Haha so glad I was wrong!

i think the texans probably have it narrowed down to 1 QB they will do anything for and if they can't get him, they'll go another direction.

texans have a defensive minded coach so it shouldn't be a surprise that fixing the offense won't be as crucial in his mind as it would offensive coaches.

If this board is any indication of the Panthers' mindset, then I would expect the Panthers to be willing to go with Stroud or Young--so I make that trade and I get a 2024 first rounder.  That could be the plan--doubtful--but if there is a situation in which they are playing rock paper scissors or drawing straws---do it.

I still maintain the Panthers really like both Stroud and Young and are really trying to get the Texans to trade up one spot.

My evidence is the fug ton of reports coming out that we like Young AND the new reports that "Houston may be ok passing on a QB"

They're both trying to smokescreen each other.

I'm fine with either Stroud or Young personally, though I give a slight edge to Stroud. But you can bet your ass if Houston offered me #33 overall or their first next year I'd be more than happy to take their sloppy seconds at 2

I hope that it does happen because I strongly believe they are all in for Stroud but want to get picks back and swap with the Texans.

I think we wanted OT Dawkins and then Buffalo jumped ahead of us and drafted him, leaving us to pick Moton.

That was Marty Hurney taking Stewart--drafted him off the operating table--a running back--a year after drafting another RB in the first---then traded up to grab Otah.  The next year, he makes up for it by drafting Everette Brown.  Then he makes up for that by drafting Jimmy Clausen after 2 teams that needed QBs desperately at the time (Chiefs, Vikings) passed on him--- twice (first AND second rounds). In fact, Marty spent the night between rounds 1 and 2 trying to convince the Rams to trade the 33rd pick to him--I think that was the same draft that he traded up to get Armanti Edwards because the Colts bluffed interest in him.

Sorry, what was the subject?

    • Excellent post. Before yesterday I hadn't posted in about 2 years. I just popped in every once in a while to get updates. A couple of guys around here are excellent at that and one is funny as heck. Then there's MHS831, when I do pop in I always check out your threads. I really appreciate your takes and how you explain them and also the effort you put into it. Plus, your a class act.  I also came here to mention the UDFA C I understand we signed. I've read that he was ranked in the 6th round for what that's worth. He had a solid career and has traits that are special. He needs to be developed but he has potential and his strength is run blocking and his athleticism fits what we want to do offensively I think.  I think he was a late draft target that they believed was safe so they drafted other players and picked him up after the draft instead. If so, that's smart and very disciplined.    Here's a report on his strengths: SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS Raym is a work in progress with high-end physical traits. He’s extremely light on his feet for a 300-pounder, a natural knee bender who plays with balance and leverage. Solid positional run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet. Shows a good feel for combo blocks, and Raym displays good quickness and flexibility when moving to the second level, capable of sealing the back side on reach blocks He’s a coordinated athlete who can win at the point of attack in the run game, and he can also move to consistently land blocks at the second level. Has the strong leg drive to create movement at the line of scrimmage, consistently putting defenders on the ground. Finishes and doesn't quit; competitor with a positive attitude and leadership traits that coaches admire. He's a dawg. Badass. I think his skills fit what we want to do too. This kid has the potential to be a stud for us. It's true we didn't draft him but we still got him. So, if it's really a big deal, just imagine that we had an extra 6th and drafted this guy there. He was valued there so it's a good pick. In my mind, we got a good center this draft, even if we didn't draft him. We signed him just the same.
    • That blows my mind too.  You know your system and the skill sets you covet--you have hours of game tape, you interview, you measure, you test, you weigh, you time--and 25% is the bar?  Now, I know some teams only have 2-3 openings some years, but dang.
    • 25% of day 2/3 picks would be phenomenal.   NFL Draft Pick Bust Rate Remains Very High - Daily Norseman Assuming the 30% includes first round picks, and that a draft success means the play spends significant amounts of time playing for the team that drafted him, a 25% success rate for day 2/3 picks would be well above average.
