Most of the big stories out today are about fifth year options, cuts, etc.

Here's one that's not though, and one that might be kind of important.

As much criticism as he receives - and some of it deserved - I have little faith the owners will find a better replacement.

Condoleezza Rice has been rumored to be in consideration for that job for years.

He’s their piñata. That’s his function. Like the road manager for a band. Paid to be the asshole so everyone else can act like they are nice people.

the longer you do that job, the more enemies you gradually make.  eventually, the enemies outnumber the allies.  I am guessing that is where we are now.  I have no problems with Goodell.

Same.  And the Owners have VERY little reason to have a problem with him.

Just a paid spokesman, nothing more.

I believe Goodell will eventually be extended. He does a good job being a punching bag for the media and public so the owners are somewhat insulated from their own corruption and vice.

This. His primary job is just to run interference for the owners and be their puppet while also working as a mediator between 32 of the biggest egomaniacs on the planet. It really doesn't matter who is the figurehead in that position, it's the owners pulling the strings behind the scenes anyway.
