Another one falls into the trap that is Sam Darnold

Everyone thinks they can fix Darnold.  He does throw a nice ball, but unfortunately often to the other team or over the head of the receiver.

This is like when some women fall in love with bad boys thinking they'll be the ones to reclaim them and make them husband material again.  Darnold is who he is.  He has limited processing ability (probably scored an 18 on the S2 test), no composure under pressure, can't throw receiver open to save his life.

If anyone can is Shannahan.

And to be honest, I hope he does. I liked Sam. He had to play with 2 shitty teams.

I'm not rooting against him I'm just not buying it.  He won't have more success than Purdy or Garoppolo because he just doesn't have it mentally.

I don’t have high hopes on the Sam Darnold  reclamation project but hope to be pleasantly surprised. Seems like a good dude and a good teammate. I just think his ceiling is competent backup. And to echo your thoughts, yes he is in as good of a situation that he can be in.

Steve Wilks had Sam Darnold looking like a legit starting QB and we didn't have the 49ers roster.

People are crazy if they think Darnold won't succeed with the 49ers. Going to go out on a limb and say he will be the QB the entire season. Every QB they plug in that system succeeds because of the talent around them.

How can you fail surrounded by CMC/Kittle/Deebo/Trent Williams?

Will he succeed in SF?  I say it's very likely.  Did he look like a legit starter here?  No.  Watch the Steelers game.

No, he played like a legitimate backup and put up backup like numbers.  He can't be relied on to carry the team but surrounded by all the talent, he'll have a decent season.  I just don't think it's good enough for the 49ers, they want to be a SuperBowl contender and Darnold can't be counted on for that.

Darnold is overhated in panthers fandom, rightfully so we gave up a lot of draft capital and his picked up his option. With the 49ers supporting cast and great coaching he will look like a solid QB. Will he ever be an elite qb, very very unlikely. Could he be a good backup and solid spot starter on a good team, yes!

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
