Breaking, Ian Rapoport: Fitterer Fired

More from Person:

He shares an agent with former coach Matt Rhule, who had control of the 53-man roster during Fitterer’s first two years with the Panthers. So it was tough to know exactly who was responsible for some of the personnel decisions, although Rhule’s influence was obvious in some cases, like with all of his former Temple and Baylor players.

And while Fitterer’s ability to build bridges makes him well-liked in league circles and helped him establish a positive work environment with the Panthers’ scouts and personnel executives, there were times when being more resolute would have benefited him.

The decision to give wide receiver Robbie Anderson, a Temple guy and locker room cancer, a two-year, $29.5 million extension had Rhule’s hands all over it. When Anderson proved to be a one-year wonder as well as a malcontent, at least Fitterer was able to wrangle two late-round picks out of Arizona for him.

Just a Tepper yes man fall guy. How is Thomas Brown is still on staff? He’s the coordinator of the worst offense in the league.

Thomas Brown will not be on the staff next year, nor will anyone else hire him as an OC. He will go back to being a position coach for someone else.

Not just Tepper, it turns out: numerous picks and acquisitions were noted to be at the behest of coaches.

- Matt Corral, Ban McAdoo

- DJ Johnson, Ejiro Evero

- Robbie Anderson (and others), Matt Rhule

Our old friend Dr Flunky (or something) used to talk about collaboration being "The Appaloosa Way" (i.e. The Horsesh-t Method). Turns out that may have been what originally got him hired.

(and ultimately got him fired)

All coaches at this moment are gone unless someone says otherwise.
They aren’t going to announce OCs from a former staff are being fired.
Brown is gone because the season is over.

glad he is gone but what bucket of sh!t do we have to look forward to now?

2024 - bad football team with the right staff and a few players

2025 - OK team with an improving roster likely including a new QB

2026 - wild card maybe?

When reviewing the draft picks, trades and FA signings, no one could say they see any difference between Scott making these decisions or a random poster on this site. Looking at the drafts under Scott and seeing how many of these guys are either starting or contributing show how bad he was.

Sort of...

Teams don't generally fire assistants until they have a new head coach. New guy can then decide whether or not to keep them.

Given the toxic atmosphere surrounding this last staff though, I wouldn't be surprised if they're all gone.

There's an argument to be made that the Thomas Brown hire is what doomed Frank Reich.

And it's not a weak one either.  While Reich was here, we averaged 15 points per game, with him gone we averaged 10.  Not saying Reich was the answer, but the staff just didn't have chemistry at all.

    • I’m honestly not trying to argue with you or talk bad about Scourton, I like him and I’ve watched all of his Purdue stuff/videos you linked previously. Just like I’ve watched all of Princely’s Florida stuff I’m only pointing out the weight thing because I’m excited about the idea of him being 255-260 and being more of a stand up edge here in Carolina like he was at Purdue versus at A&M And like you, I have a crap load of experience doing the whole cutting/weight/fitness thing and I know how crappy/sluggish I feel when I’m holding as little as an extra 8-10lbs of unnecessary weight. So for Scourton to come out and say he’s 255-260 now and feels good that’s exciting based on what he’s put on film at 280 and not feeling his best
    • I hate seeing this. I'm not sure he was ever going to make it in the NFL without the injury but that injury knocked FSU out of the college football playoffs and cost him and them and opportunity on the biggest stage in college sports. The injuries are the worst part of this game. They've created a nearly unending list of "what ifs". Hell, every HS, college, and pro team out there has a long list of them. It's also a good reminder that there's no such thing as a routine major injury. Even though sports medicine has improved dramatically in recent decades, major injuries are still somewhat of a coin flip on how a guy is going to emerge from it.
    • I don't know what Texas A&M was doing with their edge rushers. They had two freaks in Scourton and Shemar Stewart and yet instead of turning them loose they asked them to play 20 lbs overweight and just set the edge. That's full-on coaching malpractice at any level. Much was made about Shemar Stewart's lack of sack production, but while he wasn't my favorite prospect this year a lot of that was clearly what they were asking him to do. The good news with Scourton is that, unlike Stewart, did manage to be a huge factor as a pass rusher despite this and despite playing 20 lbs overweight. If he can stay around 260-265 it should help him re-gain some of that explosiveness from his Purdue days.
