Donnelly: Process used to hire Morgan was wrong

Lots of food for thought, but what struck me the most is how Tim Donnelly said that Morgan is starting with strikes already against him. If things begin to go south relatively quickly, do you actually think that Tepper isn't going to be thinking that Morgan wasn't part of the problem and more of the same is incoming?

The second thing that struck me is that do you really think that Morgan is ultimately going to stand up to Tepper if he couldn't even stand up to Scott Fitterer?

On a positive note, he mentioned how Sportsology led to Lynch & Shannahan, and maybe they can pair a good coach up with our defensive ex-star.

I don't like this move until I'm proven otherwise,  then I'll gladly eat crow.

This hire didn't do anything to alleviate my feelings that tepper is the one controlling everyone and making the big decisions that continue to put this franchise in the toilet bowl.

He owns the team. Who else hires a GM?

I really think Morgan was the only guy they could find that was all in on Bryce.

The idea that Dan wasn’t onboard with how this roster was constructed is laughable.

1) talent eval was his main job

2) Do we really think Fitt just ignored him on all these major decisions? If you think that, then Dan has zero communication and interpersonal skills and will be steamrolled by Tepper and the coaches.

Morgan had his input on these FA signings, drafts, trades etc. maybe he signed off on them, maybe he didn’t.

someone else said Morgan was the “lead talent evaluator” as well

this was a very lackluster and disappointing hire. I want to be wrong on this.

Morgan was the biggest cheerleader of Tepper’s every move. Many people inside the building have told me.

Like forreal, additionally it doesn’t matter who he hires as GM the huddle was going to label them a yes man.

The AGM standing up to the GM? Does it matter, the GM is gonna do what they “feel is best” anyways. That’s like the QB coach overruling the OC on play calls.. imagination land.

Hiring internally is what has the Huddle all uppity. External hire you could at least have hope and looking forward to FA, the draft, and contracts with a little bit of “new guy” optimism.

Internal hire scares me a lot. Nothing has worked so far and we hired the person most adjacent to all of it. Just feels like a conventionally bad idea that you can’t defend if it doesn’t work out.

Sportsology trying to hook up Ken Dorsey with a HC job?

The writing is on the wall. Dan Morgan & Ken Dorsey reunited for a 3rd time? Throw in Ed Reed for DC to hit the hat trick & reunite the 2000 Miami Hurricane leaders. They knew how to win & build a culture.

It'll be fun!

Food for thought, everyone here thought Scott Fitterer was a slam dunk hire when we made it, he was a early favorite, and universally celebrated as the right guy when we hired him and we all know now how that turned out.

Dan Morgan is getting almost the opposite reaction, I myself will take a "hope for the best, but wait and see" approach. a negative "hot take" to just continue to poo on the panthers is easy low hanging fruit.

    • Bryce among the 7 players Mark Ross of NFL.com guarantees will get better this season. Today, I am identifying seven players who I guarantee will improve on their 2024 output in the 2025 season. Young took tremendous strides in 2024 after returning to the starting lineup in Week 8 following his benching. He looked far more comfortable in his return and produced with consistency, as he threw for 2,104 yards with 15 TDs and six INTs in the final 10 contests. Most important perhaps is Young's confidence grew immensely down the stretch, leading Carolina to either a game-tying or game-winning drive in six of those games. Now he enters his second season in Dave Canales' system with his best supporting cast to date. The Panthers drafted wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan eighth overall to pair with Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette, who I also believe is poised for a breakout campaign this fall. The 18th-ranked rushing attack from a year ago added Rico Dowdle to complement Chuba Hubbard, giving the team a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. The Panthers have taken the necessary steps to ensure Young's third season will be the best of his career, and now it's up to him to not only continue to grow as a player but prove why he was worthy of being taken No. 1 overall in 2023. I believe that's what he will do. https://www.nfl.com/news/which-nfl-players-will-improve-in-2025-c-j-stroud-deebo-samuel-among-guaranteed-risers
    • While it's fair to question how impactful a player's relationship with a coach is (especially if someone has questions regarding said coach), it's important to also evaluate the difference between the players here. Jordan Fuller was pick #199 in the 6th round while Justin Simmons was #98 in the 3rd round. Jordan Fuller might have gotten a Super Bowl ring while he was with the Rams, but he got it while on the IR. Justin Simmons, on the other hand, is a x2 Pro-Bowler (2020, 2023), x4 second-team All-Pro (2019, 2021 - 2023), and was the NFL co-leader in INTs (2022). Simmons has also fallen off in the last couple of seasons though, grade-wise. He very well might not be that same player, which could be why the Falcons have elected to replace him with Fuller. As far as getting the best out of what he has, asking him to produce with a starting DL of A'Shawn Robinson (63.56% of the defense's snaps), LaBryan Ray (51.48%), and Shy Tuttle (50.08%) isn't reasonable. Wonnum only played in 8 games, but had the second most % of snaps (37.27%) at EDGE behind Clowney (53.53%). The second-string DL based on snap % was... and don't read this if you just ate... Charles Harris (34.48%), DeShawn Williams (27.67%), and Nick Thurman (19.7%). The second-string EDGEs based on snap count would be DJ Johnson (32.27%) and Cam Gill (18.14%). With the investments made in the run defense this season though, especially on the defensive line, it's more than fair to demand a complete turn around from last season.
