I'm not Wilks' biggest fan but the dude got scapegoated. That D allowed 19 points in regulation to an offense led by Patrick Mahomes and ran by Andy Reid. The offensive wunderkind could t put up enough points. If you'd told him before the game their D would only give up 19 points and force two turnovers he would've very confidently told you what champagne he wanted for the post-game toast.

I get that but Wilks blinked in the biggest moment of his career. They had the KC offense on its heels after MVS caught that ball and ran 3 yards backwards passed the LOS. He then ran a prevent defense and allowed KC to nickle and dime them up and down the field. Shanahan even called a TO after they converted because I'm guessing he was pissed off at the defense his DC just called and rightly so. This move all but affirms that.

Shanahan has blown a double digit lead in the Super Bowl as an offensive play caller not once, not twice, but three times.

You again aren't wrong but I can definitely see why he chose to fire Wilks. That unit honestly under performed for most of the year and the defensive play calling during that GW drive will probably haunt them for awhile. It was pretty bad.

He should fire himself as the offensive play caller. There's only been 7 double digit comebacks on SB history. He's been the offensive play caller on the wrong side of 3 of them. That's wild.

Yea but he's also a large part of the reason they are even in the SB to begin with. Wilks on the other hand is not

Exactly.

I came straight to the huddle after reading of Wilks release.

I don't care what anybody thinks of Wilks. He is great coach.

I'm in 💯 agreement with you here, that Kyle should be the one that should be stepping down if ANY action is truly required, which in my opinion, wasn't needed.

Especially sucks for Wilks, because of the timing. All the DC jobs have been filled.

I know Wilks will land on his feet.  Someone will hire him in some compasity if he wants to work this coming season.

Kyle is a little bitch.

If Shanahan resigned from the 49ers, how many NFL owners would immediately fire their HC for him. Conservatively I'd say 20.

Kyle went 3 and out first drive if he weren't bailed out by a penalty.

In the biggest game of the season Wilkes had them in position to win if it weren't for horrid play calling in the third, a muffed punt and a blocked extra point.

Feels like a firing for the sake of blaming someone although the SF defense seemed worse overall last season compared to the year prior. Shanahan's going to run out of chances soon, especially once the cheap guys start asking for big money.

They switched to zone later in the game for no reason

This, this, this - cover 0 cloud which Mahomey took advantage of a couple of time.  Even when he was with Ron they would go to that soft azz zone and try to just keep the lead.  Rivera and Wilks are two peas in a pod.
