Would keeping Burns require another big D-line addition?

Recommended Posts

Burns would thrive if we had a dominant offence so the opposition has to keep passing and not just run all over him. We’re not looking very close to that so that’s what I want to trade him and get as many assets as possible. Plus he’s not worth what he’s asking

If we are being honest, Burns should not be an every down type of player because he's terrible against the run.

I have no problems with Burbs being an every down player. That's what the NFL has turned to do to the lack of true prototypical defensive ends.

My problems is the Panthers have absolutely failed to find a long term solution for the other end of the defensive line.

I think that 33 goes to the offense. Don't know if tight end or WR but one or the other. We will keep Burns and hopefully find a free agent who is ready to flourish but weren't on the right defense. I think linebacker is also a need as well as corner. Corners might be easier to find since we play so much zone they seem more plentiful that shut down corners who play man.

Any pass rusher is going to benefit from a bookend, but Burns has never been one to fight through double teams or command triple teams. I could be full of crap there but AFAIK that’s the case.

If you make a big investment in Burns do you now have to give him a FA or #33 pass rusher to keep him effective?

The answer probably feels obvious to some but I just felt like throwing that out there.

Maybe the answer isn't what can we do to make Burns better, but could Burns be the thing that makes someone else better.

Maybe he just isn't the lead edge rusher kind of guy, but works best as Edge2?

It may be the thing his agent hopes that no one starts saying out loud.

He made life easy for Reddick.

He's the 4th best player (Brown, Luvu, Horn (when healthy) on the Panthers defense.  The fact he wants elite money is crazy.

Considering our lack of cap and too few picks for too many holes, I think that a cheaper option with some upside to pair with Burns is Dorance Armstrong. He's been a rotational player kinda lost in a numbers game, but he's better than nothing.

We had Riddick and he had more sacks than Burns. We let him walk because reasons. Don't tell me you can't find a FA to put up similar numbers for half the cost.

Another bad decision made by the former regime - letting Riddick walk for what Philly paid him.  We could have easily signed him to the same deal.

The key to increasing Burns value to this defense is another EDGE who demands attention/respect.  If you don't add that then get ready for a heavy dose of running at Burns side from other teams and Burns putting up numbers similar to last year's.

I think YGM played well last year, but he lacks the speed/explosiveness to be "that EDGE" that helps elevate Burns's game.  It's why he can't even be considered to play LB....his overall speed.

I will say YGM is much better against the run than Burns.
