Dalton isn’t actually a high end backup up.  We have bumped him up a tier just because he is here.

He has seen the field each season over the last 9 years and never had a positive win % in any year.

I would disagree. You want a high caliber backup to step in and not steer the ship into the rocks. At best spell you for 4-6 games. You aren't gonna get a guy to step in and win 7+ games in a year because that guy isn't really a backup at all.

Also, when you are already in the rocks, it's hard to not keep hitting them. That's largely been his last two spots.

That would genuinely be a waste of a 6th rounder.

Well we wasted a 2 number 1 overalls and couple seconds and a probowl wr for young i mean at least a 6th rounded is normally wasted every year anyways and jones has shown more than young althouhh not much more

Jones is a backup tier player and likely more of a 3rd string QB than even a 2nd.

That really isn't worth a 6th rounder when we have many needs. It's extremely easy and relatively cheap to find someone of Jones caliber in the FA pool every offseason.

Yeah, Lock is a B tier backup guy. Nothing special about that move. Overall a step down from Dalton, IMO. Not that it is likely to matter. It is Bryce or Bust for the Tepper Panthers.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes to pivot if Bryce flops in year two.

I am guessing he might get the hook before the fans think. I am thinking part of the way through Year 3 if it really goes to poo.

If Bryce flops this year, we have the #1 pick again.

Now, they should build a real team with that kind of draft capital but will probably go for a QB.

lol..ummm no... take out the complication and just stick with Dalton...one less decision to be made off the board Morgan. Just let Bryce flop or excel this season. Ur not gonna fix all the talent problems we have so help the kid best you can. The seventh season under Dipper is a lose...we all know that....Should be figuring out how to get rid of Sanders and Thomas...

Dalton isn’t checking either key box though

Box A - young QB that potentially could surprise you

Box B - vet that is mentoring your young QB to have success

Box C - win now team and a vet who could allow you to still potentially make a run even if your starter goes down

He is supposed to be B.  But given every highly praised top tier rookie QB he has been the vet in the room for has been a disaster…..I don’t see it worth guessing he is bringing a lot to aid them.   I just don’t love him as our backup.

I'd rather draft a qb in the 5th or 6th or grab a UDFA than fuging Drew Lock. DOA

Jordan Travis makes a lot of sense. Wouldn’t really have to change the offense from Young to Travis too much. His injury might have him drop to a lower round too.

I mean that's fine but none of those are considerations in what I said at all.

It's about winning at the end of the day. I care nothing about the things you are mentioning.

Association + need = educated speculation.

Panthers need WR help = reports of Panthers looking at or being involved in FA WR's.

I expect most "sources" go like this.

Ring, ring.  Hello, this is Carolina Panthers person who works inside the building or is in the NFL in any way.

Yes, I'm a reporter.  Are you guys going after Calvin Ridley?

Anything is possible and we are looking to upgrade our WR's

Can I quote you on that?

Sure.

Sources inside the Panthers organization say they are interested in acquiring Calvin Ridley to upgrade their WR's for Bryce Young.  If the Panthers can sign Ridley, anything is possible, including a surprise trip to the Superbowl sooner rather than later.

Seriously?

    • Watching Williams last night, guy has an arm and nfl ability  i see no future with Young.  either a player has nfl ability or they dont  cant survive on 20 or less points a game
    • Fowler: Bucs 23, Panthers 16. Baker Mayfield only won a single game when he was an unimpressive Carolina starter, but somehow he’s 5-0 when playing AGAINST the Panthers. For the Panthers to pull off this upset, they’ll need to score at least in the mid-20s. With Tampa Bay relatively healthy following a mini-bye (and Mike Evans’ return is huge), it feels like this will be too tough a task. Kaye: Bucs 24, Panthers 20. The win-loss-win-loss streak comes to an end. It’s hard to trust the play-calling following the loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers know what’s on the line, but they also knew last week, too. It’ll be close; I just have trouble trusting a positive outcome after a defeating one on the road. Zietlow: Panthers 38, Bucs 35. This prediction goes against conventional wisdom, but then again, conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to apply to these Panthers. This group, after all, has yet to lose back-to-back contests since Weeks 1 and 2. I think they win this one to make Week 18 interesting — and yes, that’s even with motivated Baker Mayfield and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans in good form. Why not?
    • Sam developed into a different player after he mostly sat for a year and learned a ton by being in that QB room under Shannahan in San Francisco.  Then he went to the Vikings who have a poo load of talent and another genius level offensive mind at HC in Kevin O Connel. I think they genuinely built up his confidence in a way he never did in New York or Charlotte.  He would not have been the same player if he stayed here IMO. Especially if he had been involved in that disaster season with Frank Reich in 2023, that might have cooked his confidence for good.  I guess you could argue we wouldn't have been that bad if we also kept cmc and dj i guess.
