Another damn good point Bryce lacks arm strength!

Man you been on fire tonight. You talking some sense into me. I'm seeing the vision and Mike just doesn't seem like the best fit for us. Good talent, but the QB is probably not the best fit for his strengths.

The counterpoint is that Williams has outstanding hands and with his size, he would be able to make a lot of short contested catches for Bryce as well.

But yes, his specialty is those big downfield plays, basically Bryce’s biggest weakness.  That plus his injury history makes me not thrilled at the idea of giving him a multi year big cap hit contract.

But he’s from South Carolina and went to Clemson, if he wants to come home on a cheap deal for a year, I won’t be upset at taking the chance.  Just don’t sign him to a 3 year $45-50 million contract, which is what I’d figure he’ll end up getting from someone.

The downside is we spend $10 million a year or more on a WR who can’t stay healthy

I pointed it out in another thread the other day, you can’t look at his games played as an indicator of his health, as he’s long been unable to finish games and/or used as a decoy because he was banged up.

Removing his rookie season and this past year when he got hurt in the 3rd game, he’s played about 75 career games and had 2 or fewer catches in I think it was 26 of them.  And that’s because of how often he can’t finish games or because he was mostly used as a decoy.

He’s a GREAT player when healthy, problem is he rarely is

Injuries aside, Williams's strength is defintiely downfield jump balls. What is Bryce going to do with a guy like that?

The Charlotte Observer’s Mike Kaye reports the Panthers plan to host free agent WR Mike Williams for a visit next week.
Williams was cut by the Chargers earlier this week for cap purposes. Williams looked poised for the best year of his career at the start of the 2023 season. Through three games, the big-bodied wideout had 19 catches for 249 yards and a score. Unfortunately, near the end of his third game, Williams suffered a torn ACL, ending his season. He has struggled through minor injury issues in recent years and is set to turn 30 in October. A big reason for the visit to Charlotte will be for the Panthers to discuss Williams’ medicals. If they are comfortable with his recovery from the knee injury, he could be the next weapon added to Bryce Young’s arsenal.

He's 29 and can't stay healthy. He's a slightly better version than DJ Chark and probably twice the price.

This is disrespectful towards Mike.  He's way better than DJ Chark.

I don't neccessarily want him either due to the aforementioned health concerns. But he's definitely better than Chark.

So what, should the Panthers just give up rather than surrounding him with the best possible talent to see what they have in him?

And even if Bryce continues to suck, wouldn't it be nice to already have good players here for if we have to transition to a new QB in 2025?

I'm not even saying I want Williams but this logic doesn't make any sense.  Maybe Bryce can't do anything with someone who can get downfield, but we won't know for sure unless we try and surround him with guys like that.  And if he fails, then at least we have talent in place for the next QB.

That's the thing. We're building for the future. With or without Bryce. We're building a team that we can insert a QB into next year. Maybe target a hot FA QB next off-season if Bryce fizzles. By then we ought to be a very desirable situation.

    • Kon is a damn stud but it’s not any individual player’s team. All of the “big 3” are incredibly and equally important IMO. And LaMelo makes Kon way better (look at his shooting splits with LaMelo on the floor vs without. Also Moose and even Miles are important cogs. Honestly think we’re 1 piece away from being legit top contenders if the young guys continue to develop the next year or two. I trust this FO to be patient to find that piece within the next 2-3 years and not force anything. Plenty of time and even without adding anyone we have the pieces in place overall already to compete with any team.
    • We lost 2 very close and winnable games against top teams in the league while missing 3 critical players despite 2 of our top 3 players shooting unusually terribly. Still split the 4 games that Moose and Miles were suspended, winning the most important one vs the Hawks. This ain’t yo mama’s Hornets man. Hopefully Coby can go soon but even if not Moose and Miles are huge additions for our starting lineup and bench rotations. Schedule is pretty tough after these next 4 but I think we’ll take care of business the next 4 to get to .500 then finish slightly above .500 after that to get a 7 or 8 seed. Keep it rolling boys. Also Kon is having an insanely historic rookie season as a shooter. Like truly can’t believe my eyes watching this kid level of historic. Man what a fuging home run of a draft pick and exactly what this team needed to take that next step forward. He’s gonna shatter the rookie 3 point and franchise 3 point records. Has a real chance to be the 2nd best 3 point shooter ever or dare I say even get to Curry’s level (as a pure shooter, Curry obviously has way more to his game that has made him a GOAT).
    • I hear you but yeah like you say, above average. His numbers were good. You’d think it would be a no brainer. Anyhow… I guess the new staff is also fine with him walking?    I hope if we sign him there isn’t some secret issue of his that led to him not being valued.
