Donnelly on Hayden Hurst and a comment he made about the Panthers

Hurst is one of those former 1st round busts who has all the measurables and ends up making a lot of money in the NFL despite producing very little based on seemingly nothing more than having the athletic makeup of a guy who should be a lot better than he actually is. I said this when we signed him. We didn't sign him for who he was. We signed him for who we thought he should be. Big mistake.

Hurst evidently said there was no point in returning last season because of the front office after he was cleared to return.

There's a bit of talk about how a team can tank through roster makeup and off-season decisions but this is mostly about Hurst.

Is it possible the organization didn’t want to risk further head trauma for the player ?

I mean, it’s not unheard of to do that in a lost season, meaning no playoff possibility

that was a very gnarly looking head shot Hayden took…one day his Dad is asking for prayers and he is suddenly OK…I wouldn’t have put him back in there either

Big nothing burger in my opinion.  Tons of reasons to sit on that team last year.  Why risk injury again when we can evaluate someone else with our dismal record?

Plenty of reasons to complain, but I don't think this is a big deal.

Why continue to play the rookie QB if your big FA TE acquisition is a healthy scratch?!

And good riddance to everyone we lost.

I bet Dan Morgan was pissed at the culture we had become which is why he stayed and is why he chose Canales. We needed someone who can change the culture and identity. We didn't need the best stats guy. We needed the best guy to affect the culture. Canales was the best choice.

You seem like you’re trying to sell yourself on Canales. It was a bad hire. He’ll be gone in two years

To get your #1 overall snaps for practice and to analyze. Hurst had no future here.

Was that a serious question?

i was already sold on him. great hire.

Well...we certainly know where you both stand.

Canales is saying the right things, I'll give him that. I'm not prepared to say he's a great hire yet, but I certainly can't fathom why anyone would say he was a bad hire without really having ANY type of evidence to support that assertion (and I'd ask for enlightenment, but I don't feel that it would be well-supported).

He was the man that took the job, so I think we gotta kinda let things play out before we crown him or decapitate him by the guillotine.

I think that he's kinda tied to Morgan, and today that's a good thing from where I'm sitting. I hope that it continues to be.

    • In May of 2026, it looks like a challenging schedule...and it probably is.  I rarely listen to the "strength of schedule" conversations that light up social media this time of year. Each year teams improve and decline. I think there's chunks of the year we need to take care of business and the week 5 bye is not desired.  I do think if we don't hit the bye week at 3-1, it's going to be a major uphill battle given the schedule in front of us. This season falls on three people, regardless of schedule strength: Canales, Bryce, Evero.  Canales: Finally can truly coach all aspects of the team and not focus with gameday prep for OC duties anymore. He drives the bus and needs to get these guys in position to win each week. There's no way vets come in and put it on the line every week to watch our QB sh!t the bed (See: SF game last year). Bryce: Despite everyone's obsession with thinking Bryce is a guaranteed extension, I think this year will truly be his "prove it" year. If he comes out the way he has the past three years, I really don't see how vets and coaches can continue to put him under center long-term. He might play out that fifth year as the starter, but I think next offseason his long-term replacement is found. I also think there's no excuses with the weapons and commitment we've made on offense to insulate him with every possible weapon.  Evero: Best personnel he's had since he's been here...no excuses. Figure out how to blitz effectively. Figure out how to use CBs whose strengths are press/man. Figure out how to utilize a talented front-7 to get the hell of the field. Outside of FS and maybe....maybe ILB, there are few weaknesses on this unit.
    • Canales can never get his teams ready in the first week of the season so far. Hope that changes or Ben Johnson is going to take his azz to school.
