Nobody on this board wanted Herbert. Yall were claiming he wasn't committed to football, and that his college game wouldn't translate.

Now everyone is saying the opposite.  Such bullshit.

I was the loudest voice on the huddle for Herbert.

The masses just weren't buying his stock.

Honestly, Herbert was one of the harder QBs to figure out pre-draft for me (I feel like I have been decently accurate on predicting how well QB's would be for the years we have been looking at QB). He was high on the draft boards prior to his last year in college and then had a down year and slipped a bit. Coming from an Oregon system that does not translate to the NFL at all, I was a bit worried if his college play would translate to pro football. Obviously he has been very good, but he was one of the QBs that I thought was the hardest to figure out whether he would be good or not in the NFL.

And although it sucks not having that franchise QB, we got an absolute stud in DB that I feel like would have way better numbers if he had more talent on the d-line and didn't get double-teamed non-stop

Going back to the mock drafts Tua and Herbert were consistently going 5 and 6 to the Dolphins/Chargers. Trading up was probably an aspiration but not very realistic without giving up a ridiculous haul to the Giants or Lions. Granted I technically would have done the Bryce style trade for Herbert, Rhule would have wasted his first 4 years anyways or benched him for Darnold or something lol.

I honestly believe that if Ron Rivera and the GMs had not put so much on Cam (pourous OL, making him run so much, etc) he might still be playing.  Ron did not preserve Cam--he drove him into the ground for his career.  With Cam, RR did not have 2 consecutive winning seasons--think about that.  Cam is so much more of a leader now than he was--I wish he had spoken up then too.

I do wonder what would have happened if we hired Harbaugh in 2011 or fired Ron after the 2012 season. Maybe Cam would have had longer career.

Not firing Moron and letting him luck into a COTY award really fuged us.

We could have been in the mix for the super bowl on a yearly basis with good coaching instead of whatever the hell Ron and Shula were doing.

Gettleman also had a lot to do with that with his love for certain types of players. The coaching staff wanted Devante Adams and Stephon Diggs. He drafted bums. He also wouldn't pay a few more million for Ted Ginn and Josh Norman. There are so many what ifs from that time that turned a potential 7-8 year championship window into 2-3 years.

I mean, I was a Cam stan before drafting him was popular.  I think people are way too fixated on that narrative.

When we drafted him I largely said 2 things.

1.  If we draft Cam, you have to let him be Cam.  His size as runner is what made him special.

2.  Cam Newton would never have the same type career in terms of length of traditional pocket passers.   If you were trying to milk years onto his career....you would ruin what made him great.

Cam running didn't shorten his career.  Ron and Cam were actually a good match.  The fault is on the GM for the roster management.  Cam Newton could go out there today and truck the entire league.  Running didn't cause his injuries.

I concur with that recounting. I didn’t want Herbert because I wasn’t impressed with what I saw from him. I was very wrong and saw that immediately when we played them that year.

Denying him a legit OL for most of his career shortened his career. Shula’s dumbass shortened his career (don’t ask for evidence. Just trust me on this).

This is a must watch for any fan. The most he's ever said on his career. It's nice to see the guy speaking and living freely now.

I'm so glad Shannon got away from Undisputed and is doing these long form interviews, they're so much more interesting. I'm an hour into the Katt Williams one and it's insane.

As an aside: In one spot in the video Cam says “I have no one to blame but myself”, about something. If only more people could get to that place instead of that excuse and finger pointing routine.

Anyhow I always thought the reason Cam played the way he did was because bottom line that is how he wanted to play. That he saw himself as the most effective or able player on the field.

That is kind of anti the narrative people have taken up about him but I see it as very possible he wasn’t totally forced into that style of play. More like they couldn’t stop him from going there, so make the best of it.

And, he was the most dominant offensive player on the team, and a top guy in the league.

I would love to get the story explained from the source.
