Do we attempt to extend Diontae this season?

A lot of players find themselves in Diontae's position and use a situation like ours to re-elevate and get a new multi-year contract.  We're a bridge year for him.

Just depends if he actually likes it here enough to consider a contract in house, but he's obviously going to go to the highest offer and best spot for him, very likely not here.

Would love to see us rebuild around that Arizona receiver.  It's rare to get a guy that size with that much finese in route running.

If we land TMac @tukafan21will be so happy!

I'd shop him to contenders with need at the deadline. He's playing well but he's a headcase. That's why the Steelers were happy to ship him off for a 6th. I'd honestly rather have good draft compensation than sink big guaranteed money into a guy who might be a taking time bomb. I'd definitely keep him through the season and take the comp pick afterwards if we were developing a young QB but that's just not the case.

I haven't seen any headcase behavior out of him.

He was inconsistent with the steelers.

He and XL should be viewed as our 1 and 2 for the next 4 years. If everything is worked out correctly, DJs money should be coming off the books when it’s time to extend XL.

We can’t afford to keep trading away our proven WR threats.

Especially if we want our offense to be competitive and competent.

We finally have an elite Oline, a competent QB, a RB1 caliber running back in Chuba (with Brooks still to come), and DJ & XL looked like the best starting WR's we've had in years.

What else is there to "fix" on the offense?  IMHO there's not much (outside of a TE that is consistent receiving threat).

Our draft capital needs to be spent fixing the defense.  We should be able to do that next offseason and be a legit playoff contender next year.

Fixing the Oline & QB was the biggest part of this rebuild.  There's no reason for this to take more than one more offseason.

And extending DL is a no brainer, provided he wants to be here.

The Panthers have to stop trading their good players for draft picks in hopes of drafting more good players.  This is football 101 and Dan Morgan knows what he is doing so the days of giving up our good players for scraps is over.  They need to extend DJ in the offseason and most teams stop contract talks during the season so this isn't a distraction.  DJ is going to get paid if his production continues and he'll deserve every penny of it.

I’m trying my hardest to extend DJ and Dalton before they ever hit the open market. Draft heavily on defense for the next 2 years while taking some flyers on mid round QBs and see if something hits.

After Bryce I want to stay away from first round QBs for a few years.

If Diontae wants to be here then you see what you can work out to try to convince him to stay. Can't keep getting rid of everyone and expect to suddenly back your way into an all pro at the same position.

At the same time we need to see how he finishes the season. And our salary cap outlook is not great. If he wants to hold us over a barrel then you have to look at all available options.

IMO we should be talking about extending him by mid-season if he keeps playing well. 3-4 year deal $25-27M. He wants a big contract. We have to pay him like an elite receiver. He burned a poo out of the Bengals and the Raiders. If he had had 4 games of decent quarterbacking he'd probably be a top 5 receiver statistically. He's still top 20 with the absolute worst quarterbacking he could have had the first 2 games.

If you are saying that as annual pay, I don't think so, but you are right that he is valuable and good.

    • They've gone way overboard with the masking of plays by only filming the ball in air.  Nobody is analyzing camp highlights.
    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
