I didn't read all 5 pages of responses but what I read is that Cam is still a free agent because he didn't sign his retirement papers. So taking him to Germany would be tampering. Retire and then see what happens. You can't go into the panther hall of fame if you are still eligible to play.

This seems really straightforward. But let’s not have facts get in the way of some good speculation.

And he likely knows this

He's driving clicks to his channel

Yeah I'm not so sure that constitutes tampering based off the definition.

What specifically is there to tamper with if he is not under contract with any team and hasn't played in now three years? And the last team he was under contract with was us.

All of this is silly. Either the team wants him around or they don't. The onus shouldn't just be on him.  Particularly considering he is not the one who turned his back.

Ultimately it reads like the powers that be don't want to be publicly reminded of how hilariously awful they have been at piecing together any remote semblance of success since they released him. The Panthers front office don't pay anyone's bills here. We can acknowledge what's what.

It’s an absolute travesty he’s not portrayed everywhere in that building. When the common NFL fan is asked to name the best panther ever, they’re gonna name one of four guys.

peppers

smith

Luke

cam

Those four guys are the legacy of the panthers history and have their fingerprints all over any semblance of relevance the region has ever had in the nfl world.

Cam's been on record multiple times publically showing displeasure with many of the moves and decision made in the Tepper era starting with Matt Rhule.

We all knew Cam's second stint was a PR stunt during a lost season to help drive some fan excitement. But Cam has stated that he was set up for failure by Tepper/Rhule when he was starting just a week after resigning w/o knowing any of the playbook. Then Joe Brady was fired midseason just as they were game planning over the bye week. Plus Sam Darnold's beef/jealousy when Cam was resigned. Cam has also stated how Tepper/front office/and coaching staff has failed regarding the development of Bryce Young.

Cam has also directly said he wanted to be Panther's president in order to help with marketing and driving fan's interest which Tepper has likely ignored.

We all know that Tepper is the petty type specifically buying his former boss's house and demolishing it afterwards, having beef with reporters, throwing drinks at fans, etc.

The Panthers have stated that they "don't know if Cam is retired yet" which is why they don't have any pictures of him and did not invite him to Germany. Newton has not officially filed his retirement paperwork, and there may be some validity to their excuse.

The NFL is and has been cracking down on tampering. With Newton technically still an active free agent, albeit one who is almost certainly not playing ever again, the Panthers might be subject to fines or penalties if they get involved with him. They would be technically advertising a free agent within their stadium.

The trip to Germany may also fall under that category, though it's probably a little easier to get away with since Newton could've just been in Germany in theory. It's also worth noting that this is an extremely unique situation and we could not find a clear answer on if NFL teams can honor active players not on their team. Newton was a rare player, and he's in a very rare situation right now.

Logically, to me at least, it really seems like because cam isn't officially retired the team is erring on the side of caution and staying away.

Can you image the shitstorm it would be if the league decided flying Cam out to Germany constituted tampering and we were docked a draft pick for it?

The retirement thing is just a convenient excuse from Tepper. I'm sure if the team was trying to bring him on officially he would do it in a heartbeat and the league wouldn't bat an eye at it. He's not getting any other calls and we know there's a direct line of communication.

You telling me no other team has put up a photo of an active player who left? I have a hard time believing the league would flag a MVP display, literal team history, as tampering. Moving on from JR is clearly bull too when we're parading Luke and Smitty around. It's Cam.

Tepper knows that if Cam is brought on in any capacity, as long as he looks athletic to the average fan there's going to pressure to put him in when we're struggling at QB. They've decided he's not worth that but I think is a huge mistake. The organization stands to lose more burning this bridge than he does.

If Cam is done, he just needs to retire.  Even on that episode of the podcast, he said he would never play again, but he's not going to "retire."  OK.

I think it's stupid.  Cam Newton is the best player in Panthers history.  He made us relevant.  He was polarizing, but you can't deny that Cam changed the course for the Panthers.  He needs to have a sit down with Tepper, clear the air, and Cam needs to sign his retirement.  Then the Panthers make it one for the ages and make it a city wide celebration of everything Cam has done on and off the field.

    • To all the analysts who said "Caps in 5", thank you for telling us their departure time.
    • We won't know the answer to this for a long time. Reality is, Caleb has been the consensus #1 in that draft for years. Bryce was a similar situation, but mostly the same. He was not the clear and obvious #1 that Caleb was, but most teams had Bryce at QB1. The Panthers were always going to be terrible Bryce's rookie year.  I don't think DJ Moore's presence would have changed anything about that offense, as our guards, center, and left tackle were getting demolished on nearly every snap. It's clear Caleb's dad was trying to do everything possible to ensure Caleb didn't end up in Chicago with Eberflus. It's hard to imagine that he wouldn't have done the same, but probably more publicly with our situation, considering Carolina is an easier target for the media than Chicago. We can all speculate, but it's impossible to tell who is going to have the better career on May 16, 2025. If either QB doesn't pan out, we have an easy answer. If both flame out, the bears clearly won the trade, but it wouldn't have really mattered anyway. We all know how we win the trade. Candidly, even if one of the other picks we gave up ends up being a hall of fame player, we don't know if the panthers would have taken that player anyway. All you can do is make the best decision you can in the moment with the information you have. I really like Bryce Young, and I'm glad he's a Carolina Panther.  The only way to win in the modern NFL is to have an absolute dude at QB. I personally am happy that our franchise recognizes this, as I remember times when they did not.
