Corbett might not be gone

If we part ways with Corbett we have 8 million in dead cap space.  Trying to keep without guaranteeing anymore (since we guaranteed most of his last contract with little return.), would be the smart move.  Make it incentive based  with roster bonuses if he goes along with it. Otherwise you have little choice but void him out.

This is good news, as long as the deal is team friendly. Corbett has been rock solid, even at Center, when healthy.

TD had 3 ACL tears and still had a Hall of Honor career here with multiple Pro Bowls and an All-Pro.

The injuries suck, but it's nothing that has been career threatening.

He's been an above average player when healthy. If he's willing to structure a deal to protect the team, I'm 100% on board.

I get where you are coming from for sure, but center is a critical position. Mays was not exactly lighting the world on fire and we have zero depth behind him. I’d be fine with signing Corbett to a team friendly deal or drafting someone. They are prob thinking that with as many holes as we have it would be nice to focus on other areas on the team with our draft picks this year.

Mays played well.  I watched him, expecting a let down, and he got better each week.  image.thumb.png.50c7e321a2d9be69219de560adffef79.png

Mays was a better pass blocker than both guards.and Corbett.   Discuss.

At least when Mays was in he wasn't getting pushed back constantly into Bryce like our last big signing at center, Bradley Bozeman. Mays held his own and I think he earned the chance to compete for the starting spot fulltime.

Only way this makes sense, if its cheap.

Like has been posted, he's had two severe injuries over two years that's limited his GP.

Need to wait and see what happens.

He’s going to get injured again…that’s what’s going to happen.

Yeah this is great ammunition when trying to get a team friendly deal out of Corbs

I mean, the greatest ammo is the injury history. That will lower his FA value tremendously.

He is a very capable OG IF healthy. He was a middling center, however.

It is a shame this is such a weak center class and we passed on Zach Frazier last season(I know, this dead horse again).

Eventually we have to get serious about addressing C because both Corbett and Mays are the obvious weaknesses on the OL.

The problem with this franchise is the amount of dead horses that are laying on mint st

I'm not opposed to keeping him depending on the money. If he's going to count against the cap anyway (which the void year does) it's not the worst move unless an extension significantly raises his cap number. Even if it's just a 1-year deal that pays him a little more than what he's already on the books for.

When he's been on the field he's been really good, but the issue is obviously injuries. I will say, having Corbett back as the starter would also give us good depth since Cade Mays can move into the backup role. That could be key if (more likely when) Brady Christensen leaves.

Hard to say right now without seeing the potential terms of any new deal.

In all honesty, though, if we're going to spend money on re-signing an OL I'd prefer trying to keep Brady Christensen. He's extremely valuable depth given he can play literally every position on the OL at a serviceable level or better, including center.

No team in the league would sit back and say Mays outplayed Hunt or Lewis so its a typical case of stats (or ratings) not telling the story. The team also was in a much better position at the end of the year, where the begging was very rough all around. Everyone was learning the new scheme, calls, learning how new teammates played in real games and all of that changed the second half of the year. We started getting actual production from the run game and receivers and everyone’s play changed from the beginning of the year.

As a side note Mays goes down or another linemen who is coming in? We have zero depth and Brady Christiansen will be hitting free agency to be a starter elsewhere.
With as many holes as we have it makes sense as long as it’s team friendly deal. I’m not opposed to drafting someone as well, but we know what we are getting from Corbett when healthy and he’s above average playing multiple positions. Maybe they have it as an open competition between him and Mays, loser is the prime backup for G and C

If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.

Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know.

Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome.

In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.

Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.

I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.

    • I appreciate the honesty in your posts--I am not sure Canales is rusing(?) because I don't think we are good enough yet to draft players for depth on day 1.  I do think we are in limbo, fwiw.  At 19, I think you are drafting second rounders in the first.
    • We are in a unique situation here. Just my opinion. Three things: Moton’s playing health has been gradually declining as he is aging, while his contract is a drag on the payroll.  Something will give with him sooner than later but I think 2026 could be it.  So.. need a right tackle by 2027. At the latest.    Icky’s individual situation is unique as well. They would have had an extension done by now if not for the injury. We only have him for this year. With no assurance he will ever be the same player.  It would be reckless just to assume. Now we have Walker for one year. And that is a major relief. Maybe he is the answer, but the team that knows him best let him go and it was cheap for us to sign him. So how much did they value him?    We look to be needing two tackles by 2027.  And have poo for depth this year as well. So anyway we could draft a guy for 2027 RT and groom him this year, and see how Icky does, and act as needed in 2027. Spread out filling the two holes over 2 years.    Then I remember, hey if Bryce doesn’t get a Lot more consistent do they extend him? Hoping not, if he isn’t really good.    So then we are looking at the 2027 draft which people say is gonna be loaded with QBs. If we need a LT and a QB what is the pick gonna get spent on?   Taking into account the recovery success rates cited here on the Icky surgery, you might want to plan for him to not be the same player. rather than assume he will be and get caught with your pants down.  It is a tough situation.    And factor in that it is critically important to protect this QB, always, but especially this year where it is said to be make or break. And how you might feel about that.    All of it points to a real possibility that these things converge in the negative, like Bruce sucks and Icky is not the same. In that case if you want to be assured of getting LT secured, the only place you can do that through the draft could be very well be 2026 1st round.     For me, I would like to err on the side of caution.  Cover for these outcomes. It wouldn’t be fun. Added benefit is if we do have a tackle go down this year we will have a guy there. Because I don’t know what we have now.
    • I agree. In a perfect world I wouldn’t want to draft another WR, but in this draft it’s fine based on the value of who will be there at #19.  All of the top tier guys worth pick #19 at other positions of need will be long gone. Only exception is Dillon Thieneman, but he’s almost a shoe in for the Vikings as the Harrison Smith replacement. Some posters on here want to draft an OT just to check a box without realizing the concerns and risk that comes along with said player. Sounds like XL to me… desperately drafting need… KC is a pretty safe player.  Produced all 3 years in college and last year in the SEC vs a lot of top corners in this years draft. He single handily dropped the South Carolina CB Brandon Cisse’s draft stock with how bad he abused him.   Sometimes it’s best to try and hit a double instead of going for the home run. This draft screams “go for the double”. Esp in the first.
