REPORT: Panthers like Mykel Williams

He only has 1 season of real playing time, doesn't have a natural position, is too much of a pass rusher to be a true linebacker but isn't big enough to be a true edge rusher.

He's a project, no if's, and's, or but's about it.

Just the fact that some people on here view him as a ILB and others as an edge rusher, says a lot about him being a project.  If you don't fit into a true position at this point (Hunter aside as that's totally different), you're a project, period.

He absolutely could turn into a solid player, but of all the guys we're talking about at 8, he's probably the least likely to make an immediate impact next year, namely because there isn't a natural fit for him yet.

He wasn't the starter in 2023, if he played for Arizona then he would have been and his stats would have been better.  He did have 5 sacks in his limited play

Biggest problems with Mykel:

  • He's not actually that athletic for his size and really lacks in the burst department
  • Terrible hands which is a pet peeve of mine with DL.  He's not a given year 1 contributor because of his technique.
  • Not a guy that had a pass rush plan developed with counters.  Doesn't have the nuances down compared to someone like Ez who is super refined.  His pass rush skills need some serious development.
  • As mentioned, a 11.1% pr win rate, 61.0 pass rush grade on true passing downs (bottom of class)
  • Is better suited for a 4-3

Where I'll concede:

  • Optimal Power & Bend is there
  • Super young and hopefully moldable
  • UGA's scheme does not do someone in his mold any favors in showing off perimeter outside shoulder skills
  • Good motor while being light on his feet.  Fiery guy

Telegraphed the XL pick last year as well. I’m not sure why we do this…

Yeah if this actually happens come draft day, it's going to be a tad annoying.

It's been rumored for a month already.  Especially if someone surprising falls and we still take this kid over Graham for example.

What I like most about his game is he looks like a dementor out there against the run. He floats right through blockers and takes souls of the ball carrier.

On the real tho I’d rather have Walker as an Edge. Walker has better outside rush, better dip, better bend. Team leader.   Anybody that pencils Walker as ILB has a size fetish. Watch the tape, he’s only effective as an ILB as a spy or blitzer on 3rd/4th down. Or give me Warren as a TE. I want the safe options here.

I don't feel confident in anyone they like anymore. They have not been doing good in the draft in this era.

Also not a great sign they are still leaking info. It's embarrassing and mirrors the lack of success. Any other team and this would be a smokescreen. For us it's likely a lock unless someone else take him first.

You don't draft projects with the #8 overall pick. Especially not when your next pick isn't until pick 57.

If we picked Stewart or Mykel Williams that tells me Dan Morgan had big say in some of the more head scratching draft choices in the past few years and we might have given Fitterer too much of the blame.

If you out Rhule and Fitterer in here, it would be how that all went.

I am starting to think it's the whole crowd of them.

"I'm told....I'm told..." WHO IS TELLING YOU THIS????  Every year, everyone knows all about the Panthers interests etc.  Damn, Morgan.  Transparency is not good.  Learn two words:  Smokescreen and shutup.

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
