Verge, why do you like Mykel Williams?

Verge, I’ve seen that you really like Mykel. Can you share some insights in to why so I can be prepared if we pick him? I’ve only watched a few Georgia games and I’ve barely noticed him, so I must have missed something.

I am not Verge, but until she chimes in, I would suggest that you watch both Texas games if you are looking for hope--I understand that he was injured some this year.  However, if you have a good game twice against one team, it could be that one team did not have an answer for him.  It could also mean that Texas saw what you did the first time and could not stop you.

I at least get the Walker hype based on his ability. Williams looks like a weak 4-3 DE. I would rather have Golden from what I could watch of those videos.

I get that Mykel was injured last year, but I still don't see it for a top-10 pick. After a trade-down in the teens or 20s? Yeah, fine. Or MAYBE if Jalon Walker and Mason Graham are both off the board at #8, but I just can't see taking him at #8 over either of them.

Mykel seems like so much more of a projection to me than Walker, which is not good given that Walker is the tweener LB/EDGE of the two. I will say Mykel profiles as the better fit in a 4-3 defense, but I've never been a big fan of drafting players based on scheme fit. Great players will play great in any scheme, especially on defense.

Mykel seems like a fairly low ceiling and VERY low floor guy. Outside of the measureables, he very much looks like he is on the Shemar Stewart end of the scale. 

I would be very disappointed to see him taken at 8. Late 1st, early 2nd I can understand.

I think it’s far too early to know which side of the scale Shemar Stewart will land. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a top 10 EDGE in 3-4 years. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he has a career like YGM.

The kid is a good run defender already, his pass rush needs work but he has the tools and a few games where you saw what could be in the NFL. if we drafted him he would be one of the best players on the d-line tomorrow but that's a low low bar.

I get what you're saying but his pass rush win rate is terrible.  I get that our run defense and defense in general was awful last year, but leave it to Dan Morgan to sell out to build a defense entirely around stopping the run in the modern nfl.

I see our situation this way--we need a guy who can get outside at the 9, pin his ears back, and get to the QB.  He should have been working on his hands, his moves, and his strength.  At #8, we do not need to be drafting a player based on "athleticism" or "upside" or "ability."  That is what college was for.  We can't afford to miss.  So if we take Williams, they better be right about him.

We have Clowney, Wonnum, Jones, Barno, Johnson--but this draft is full of players that can pretty much do the same things--bigger, 4-3 types and, in our case, pass rushers who are under performing.  In my view, the players in the first round that might be good fits have baggage (Pearce, Green).  For this reason, I am hoping we wait until round 2 to find the "sweet spot" in edge rushers for the Panthers:

Princely is my favorite, but I am warming up to J. Stewart.

I would say that the majority of Huddlers do not want Stewart or Williams.  Is that a fair statement?  We will have better safeties who are dawgs in run support, hopefully better LB play, much better DLinemen, and our CBs are good tacklers.

This player needs to be a beast who can get to the QB.  Let the other guys play the run--see ball, get ball.

I keep thinking about Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy--both emerged in year 3.  However, they are expendable, and if your line chart is not trending upwards, you are sitting still or falling behind.   They have not been that bad when they play, but we need a difference maker.
