Winners and Losers: Preseason Game 1

Recommended Posts

Leaving out Young is pretty wild.

Winners:
Jalen Coker, Bryce Young, Nic Scourton, Corey Thornton, Tetairoa McMillan, Sam Martin, JJ Jansen, Ryan Fitzgerald

Losers:
Trevor Etienne, OL, most of the defense and anyone who watched all 60 minutes

Etienne helped gift ESPN its highlight for the next 9 days.

Winners:

Corey Thornton - Aggressive in run defense, capable in pass defense. Might be another UDFA gem. Loved what I saw.

Tetairoa McMillan - Showed the big play ability and hands to be selected in the top 10.

Jalen Coker - Ascending. Might be the most reliable target on this team now, and going forward.

Nick Scourton - Loved the hustle to notch his first sack. Had a couple TFLs as well.

Losers:

Nick Scott

Andy Dalton

Special Teams

2nd/3rd String Defense

Jack Plummer

Xavier Legette

Add J Morgan Guard to that loser list dude blocked air and ended the first drive.

Winners:

Bryce Young- Looked totally in command. That 2nd drive (especially the dime to T-Mac) was a work of art.

Tetoria McMillan- Still working on some timing with Bryce, but he will be a cheat code in one-on-one coverage and in the red zone.

Nic Scourton- 2 TFLs and 1 sack. Legit impact player.

Jalen Coker- How do you keep him off the field? Might be the best receiver on the roster. Just a solid, solid player.

Corey Thornton- Looks like another UDFA gem from Dan Morgan. To me at least, him & Coker were the most impressive skill position players out there tonight. Mike Jack better watch his back. Looks to have CB4 locked down.

Sam Martin- Was honestly worried when we let Hekker go, but he was booming punts tonight. Must have had close to a 50 yard average.

Matthew Wright- Didn't see him kick a FG, but he did good on kickoffs with the new rules

Losers:

Xavier Legette- Was provoked by the Browns player, but getting kicked out was dumb. He needs as many reps as possible and to prove he deserves a starting job over Coker

Nick Scott- Please Panthers sign another S, please. He is cheeks at coverage, and got blocked into Trevor Etienne causing a fumble. Why is he still on this team?

Andy Dalton- 1st time I can remember him looking old on the field. I've read he's been sharp in camp, but he wasnt good tonight.

Shemar Bartholomew- Had some good and bad reps, but not enough good to feel confident. Still wouldn't hate bringing in another outside CB. Stephon Gilmore is still unsigned.

Defensive Depth- Overall still needs work. Tonight proved that.  I think the starters are better, maybe significantly, but depth surely isn't there.

Overall, I'm pleased with the outing. Biggest thing is no injuries.

Looking forward to how we looked against Houston

That defense....Evero might be in over his head. Players in wrong positions, missed tackles...that was very rough, all night long. I think the offense this year will be top 15, its going to be good and exciting and Bryce might be a star. But unless Brown and Jaycee play like DPOY's, there's no hope for that side of the ball. Tepper will pay big bucks for a defensive former head coach next offseason I assume. We also will have to pray to get a great ILB in the first round of the draft

I think this is a big leap to make based on a preseason game where our two best players weren't even suited up.

In the same way offenses won't run their best plays in the preseason because they don't want to put them on tape for opponents to study, defenses also tend to run very generic play calls to not give away their schemes they plan on using that season as well.

Missed tackles are either on the individual players or their position coaches who should be coaching them up in that area, not the DC who is more of the scheme coach.

I'm not absolving Evero, especially after last year, but just saying you really can't judge coordinator schemes based on the preseason, they purposefully run vanilla stuff which is usually going to create some poor plays.

    • Went to school in MD when this came out. Dance floor got CRAZY when this joint came on!
    • They had best show out in Week 1 there are zero,I mean zero,  excuses for that offense  defense, haven’t play together yet and they still have Mr Soft and Predictable as DC  I expect break downs at times  …but that offense returns all starters except Tremble and both Mayes and Brady are veterans and can play LG and know the system not up for any participation awards this season they can save that practice energy for Jacksonville.     I’m sick of the, winning,  or looking competitive, when it doesn’t matter.
    • There are some tough decisions that I'm eager to see the results of... Does Blackshear sneak on to the roster as RB4? Does the team go with 4 TEs or just 3 again? And has Mitchell Evans done enough to defend his roster spot from James Mitchell? Who is WR6 and is there a WR7? TMac, XL, Coker, and AT seem to be locks imo and I'm assuming Renfrow also makes it due to all of the camp praise. Who makes it between Brycen Tremayne, Jimmy Horn Jr, and David Moore? If the team goes with 7 WRs, which one of those three doesn't make it? Jacolby George and Emani Bailey both have not gotten a lot of game time. Could the Panthers be trying to hide them so that they can be stashed on the PS? Do they go with 10 OL instead of 9? Who makes it out of Walton, Carter, and Kingston? DL locks are DB, BB3, ARob, and Turk. That leaves Jaden Crumedy, Cam Jackson, Sam Roberts, Shy Tuttle, and LaBryan Ray all competing for the final 1 - 3 spots. Does DJ Johnson get IR'd and Thomas Incoom make the roster as EDGE5? What in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck is going to happen at LB? Only locks seem to be Wallace, Rozeboom, and Cherelus (Wallace has mentioned in media how Cherelus has been big bro for him on the team). Rhattigan had some good moments against Houston, Martin-Scott is an SC guy, Krys Barnes has popped on defense and on special teams, and Windmon got time starting for the team last season. Are two of those guys going to make it or are the Panthers poaching from another team's cuts? CB5... who is it? Do they go with the 4 expected safeties or bring in a 5th? Has Ransom done enough to take the start from Nick Scott?
