Bryce by the numbers(emotionless post)

Bryce Young is showing real promise early in the season, and Week 1's numbers back it up when you dig deeper. Ranked 4th in completion percentage (66.9%) and 4th in catchable ball percentage (87.0%) among QBs with meaningful snaps, Young's arm talent and decision making stand out his passes are hittable, but Carolina's receivers left 150 yards on the field via drops, including a brutal 35 yard TD brick by McMillan and multiple from Renfrow (two for 30 yards total). Add in a 30 yard PI on T. Mac that screamed six, and his raw output (297 yards, 2 TDs) could've easily been his state line. 

 

That "second INT"? A dump off that bounced right off an wide open Dowdle pure receiver error, not on Bryce. His off schedule grade (71.1, 9th overall) and passing grade (71.8) reflect a poised pocket presence from a guy who's still just 24, adapting to a revamped O line and weapons. The unseen yards list is long (bad snaps, tip balls, etc.), but it screams "QB not the issue here." Young's processing and accuracy lean elite; give him reliable targets, and he's a franchise cornerstone in the making. #KeepPounding

I mean there's already a thread for the Bryce Young excuse party using these cherry picked PFF metrics, but here's my response. 

How many games does Bryce post abysmal stats and lose the game until it's his fault? He's 6-23 as a starter and regularly posts stat lines that look like a third string emergency QB until some garbage time pads his stats.

 While I am hoping like crazy for Bryce to lead the Panthers to sustained success, the proof isn't there right now.

Did he make some good throws Sunday?  Yes.  Did he make some bad throws?  Yes.  Did XL (and others)let him down?  Yes.  Did he make some stupid decisions?  Yes.  Bryce wasn't good Bryce, and the team was pretty poopy.

Now the PFF grades...I don't know much about analytical math.  OK - but my eyes saw a team that wasn't prepared to play, not just a QB.  If we're going to count drops at competitions and missed yards as actual yards...Then I'm the king of England!?  Right?

I don't know what is worse, using clearly bad PFF takes from week 1.....or the even more comical (hard to do) fantasy takes from some random on twitter guy who awards horrific throws by Bryce as...unseen yards lol. 

I can deep dive stats and cherry pick stuff to make any player I want good or bad.  That's the world we are living in now.  It's just lying at this point.

The fallacy in this is you're comparing Bryce's "what ifs" against others "actuals". You would need to give every other QB all the same breaks. Herbert probably had 650 yards and 5 TDs by these metrics

50% of his passing yards were in the final 8 minutes of the 4th quarter.

XL was a wasted pick, we all kinda knew it at the time but wanted to try to give a 23 year old rookie the benefit of the doubt. TMac you grab 10/10 times in the draft, doesn't matter. If there is a legit bonafide #1 WR you can get for 3 years cheap (and you don't already have one) you always do that. Either Bryce turns it around or our rookie QB next year has a young star WR.

      I guarantee it makes a difference. Give up 2 scores and its basically over until garbage time. The offense can barely drive the length of the field in 3 quarters. The defense has been gutted to build around a QB that is possibly the biggest bust in NFL history. For what we've put into the offense the past 3 years, we should be dropping 30 bombs with regularity. The only 30s we get are FGs.

      Not according to some fly by night fantasy crusader!  There were 10 drops that should have netted Bryce another 450 yards and 7 TD’s

      What? Am I mistaken that his rookie year included a horrible coaching staff and support players.   It's wasn't just Bryce.  I won't judge any player from that yeah.  It's impossible to make an accurate assessment on any player under those conditions. It's that simple. You break down each play and look at each player, what the expectation was, what happened during the play and what circumstances affected every player and position. There a reason why the narrative was he could be the biggest NFL bust in history.  Then after his benching he started to show remarkable improvement. Thus all the talk from fans and media about how dramatic of a turnaround it was and that Carolina no longer had a QB problem. First game this year the whole team stunk it up.  Why?  Plenty of blame to go around including Bryce. Improvements do not come it a nice straight line angling up.  I think Sunday was a step back for the whole team.  Still plenty of time to see if it was a bad outing to grow from or another indicator of issues that can't be overcome.
