Why is everyone focused on BY while the real problem is ignored

Seems like almost everyone here blames Young for the Panthers losses while completely ignoring the defense and its impact on their record.

Last year, they gave up 32 points a game which means they had to, on average, score 33 to win. In fact, in their last two wins, the Panthers scored 36 and 44 and they still just barely won as the defense gave up 30 and 38. Having to score 33 points to win a game is untenable long term regardless who your QB is.

I have no idea why Canales decided to bring him back but given it was his decision to bring him back, Canales fate may be more closely tied to him than Youngs.

The O averaged 10 points per game last year and that includes “good” Bryce.

The D is awful but when the O is this bad nothing else matters.

The best D in the league gave up 17 per game so even if we had a great defense, we just can’t score enough. Sad considering how much we’ve put into the offense.

Hmmm.... why could we be mad??

Maybe because we drafted Bryce #1 in 2023 and he still sucks + have tried to draft and sign every high value free agent on offense to help Bryce out. Want to know why our defense sucks... We spent a crap ton of cap space on Hunt & Lewis because Bryce can't see over the oline while drafting mostly offensive players in the draft the past 2 years. I think most of our fan base would struggle to name a player on our defense besides DB and Horn.

And the sad thing is... Our defense somehow outperformed our offense week 1, despite having little talent and a ton of new parts.

I will give you 1 thing though... We should be less mad at Bryce and more mad at Tepper/the front office that thought Bryce was worthy of the #1 pick.

I bet Evero is in meetings like “If we had any other quarterback, I would not have given up the most points by any defense in NFL history”

oh wait how many points did Andy Dalton have to score to win his one game last year….

The defense is honestly BY FAR our biggest problem. Bryce Young’s play may be #2 and whoever decided to decide that turnstile instead of Brady Christensen who played BETTER than Icky when he was in at LT is firmly #3.

We will see if that is still the order after week 2 if Bryce steps up his play.

At least we didn't trade away multiple 1st and 2nd round picks for our defense to suck like we did for Bryce to suck...

Bryce is the reason we have been awful since week 1 of 2023 and will probably be awful for at least another 2 seasons after he is gone.

And not sure why people keep saying BC plays better than Icky... Sure, BC is probably a slightly better pass protector than Icky, but people fail to realize Icky is one of the best run-blocking tackles in the league. Want to know why Chuba ran for so many yards last year? A big reason is because of Icky. Want to know why Chuba didn't do much running the ball last week? A big reason is because of Icky (and Bryce being so bad Jacksonville wasn't worried about the pass)...

The defense is not great but it is possible to win games when your defense gives up 26 points, especially when they gave up like 9 points total over 3 quarters.

And let's not forget that 10 of the Jacksonville points were a result of a bad BY pick that gave Jacksonville a short field and the failed onside kick that gave Jacksonville a short field

Yeah... One bad game for Bryce meaning he's not a pro and should be replaced, after a strong finish to last season is a little premature. But the clock has started for sure. If anything, we've seen that he needs to do something to have a better start to the season. That is not sustainable.

Truth. The team ain't ready. The defense ain't ready. Derrick Brown didn't even look good. Just because you throw a lot of resources into a position group doesn't mean you've magically fixed it. And saying the team is using resources to make a specific QB look serviceable is insane to me. If they're using draft picks at a position, it means they didn't have good players at that position. If they're using free agency to get good players at a position, it means they didn't have good players at that position. It IS NOT to make the QB look serviceable. It's to make the TEAM look serviceable. Football isn't a sport where money necessarily fixes the problem either. I remember the Panthers spent a lot of money on the brother of another olineman, and that was a complete disaster. Paid a lot of money to a HC that was fired half way through his first season and no other team hired him, even though there has been unusually high HC turnover in the NFL. Throwing high draft picks at a position doesn't mean you fixed the problem either. Remember Kelvin Benjamin and Funchess with Cam? Mingo, Marshall...

I think after week 4 we'll have a better idea of what we have. This is an extremely young and new group of receivers. The only receiver out there that had ever caught a pass from BY last Sunday was XL. And he wasn't exactly in prime form. I guess if you want to count J. Sanders and Tremble, then... Ok.

This is the answer.  It doesn't matter how bad the defense is.  We can't score.  We can't win.

The offense on paper is good enough to do more than what we did on Sunday. Bryce, one again, struggles to get 150 yards a game. I think he had under 75 in the 3rd quarter. The Jaguars are not an elite defense. The offense should not have struggled as they did.
The defense is not good but the offense did them no favors.

You know... I was going to try and focus an all-22 review thread on some of the "major" moments during the game on offense but seeing as how it feels like a lot of the more vocal fans would prefer reaffirming their feelings I'm wondering if focusing on the defense instead would provide better value.

Absolutely. The defense was by no means good but if we had a competent offense, we give them a shot too.

Good teams don't need to limit an opponent to 13 or less to have a shot at winning. Sure, it helps... But still
