Panthers need edge rushers

I recently caught a lot of flack for saying I’ve barely noticed scourton or especially wonnum this season and oh look I’m right

Left to right is now often they’re doubled.

Bottom to top is basically how well they do.

So at the bottom left Jordan Burch is basically ignored and does nothing, while at the top right Myles Garrett is playing like a damn Balrog this year.

Both wonnum and scourton are performing below expectations standardized against the other edge rushers. Scourton is double teamed more often on average, wonnum is right in the middle.

Edge is just as important as qb heading into 2026.

I think you are somewhat right.

Edge is a need, but man when I watch the Panthers on defense Scourton is consistently making plays that open my eyes. His motor is top tier, he seems to get better every week and is getting more playing time.

The dude is literally 21 years old. And on top of that, your chart here shows hes getting double teamed more than half the league lol. Why would that be if he wasnt good? Also consider D.Brown is out there drawing double teams as well.

To me thats impressive

Scourtin, I have zero concern about. Not only is he physical but his particular work ethic paired with that motor already tells me what l I need to know. He needs the reps and more time to develop. Right now he's at his floor but he's going to be a monster once he gets comfortable.

Wonnum should really be more of a depth peice imo..... also add Pat Jones to that list.

We do need another starter opposite Nic. If the plan is to let him develop in that starting role then the other side needs somebody who can run stop and make an immediate impact w/ the pass rush.

I’m happy with Princely and Scourton with the understanding that they’ll probably be depth someday. I feel like we “hit” on them at least based on early results. If we are drafting in the middle of the 1st we’ll be too far out for some elite talent. Probably just go O line or LB at that point.

This is where I am. They’re players that will get a second contract in the nfl.

That’s a marked improvement from the past couple of drafts, Bryce included.

This is my thinking on them too. We don't know their ceiling yet but their floor looks to be depth. This is such a massive improvement from recent drafts. Of course, it's early enough for them to flop but boy are then early results promising.

But to your wider point, I think it would have helped the D a ton if we'd landed an edge at the trade deadline. Ah well.

As much as people hated on him, it sure would be nice to have Burns right about now. People flipped over the contact he got which looks like a great deal in return, and he’s leading the league in sacks.

On paper, he was part of the best defensive line in the NFL. I don’t think there was a better landing spot.

People like me are upset because at the time, it was an offer for a caliber of player that he wasn't, the FO was still refusing to admit we needed to rebuild, which we did, and we gave up all leverage in negotiating by refusing said offer of that caliber. And that doesnt even bring into play how much better of a position we could have been in using those Rams 1sts instead of our future 1st overall and DJ Moore.

It was classic Fittershits.

    • Truth. Like when UNC hired Butch Davis and then we get hit for recruiting violations. Like yeah, no poo. Dude coached Miami when they we paying like the 33rd NFL team. What did you expect?
    • He's a hard player to rank, cause he is a young NT. I do see his abilities to branch out among the DL. That's the only way for him to land in the 1st, some team has to believe he's got the stuff to play DE or T3.... I just don't see using 19 on him, I feel there should be around 7 players just ranked higher than him for the Panthers team.  ___________________________________________________________________   Now you are a roster nut like me. Im tossing this into fire, I think a good move is to trade UP, yes rare. Just the roster #s tell me 5 rookies and no more than 2 starters will make the team. I feel 5 is magic number.    QB- 2  BY, Pickett RB- 3   Chubba, Brooks(pls), etienne TE- 4   Sanders, Temble, Evans, Draft pick/major/franks/UDFA OL- 10   Walker, Lewis, Fortner, Hunt, Motown, Zavailla, Samac, Stone, Draft pick, Draft pick/Charles/carter WR-  6   Tmac, XL, Coker, Metch, Horn, Tremay   offense=  25 with 3 draft picks   DL-  6   Brown, Brown, Wharton, Ray, Cam, Hunter/draft pick Ed-   5  Phillips, Nic, Prince, Jones, ST/incoom/hampton ILB-   5  Lloyd, Wallace, Bam, Claud, draft pick CB-    5 Horn, Jackson, Thor, Evans, draft pick/CSN/UDFA SS-  4  Scott, More, Ramsom, Sim   Defense = 25 with 2 picks   ST = known 3+o+d = 53 roster   SO I see only room for 5-6 with factoring in UDFA pool. That tells me to trade up! Bonus the 1st+3rd gets in front of TB yucs. Then use one of the 5ths+2nd to draft another target. That's your two starters and use the 4th, 5th and 6th for the development OTs and what ever the best player are at the pick/DB. The last couple years they have added 2-3 UDFA each year, maybe the same this year too. Soooooooo Im normally 95% trade back, but above made me change my mind. I do not want to waive 5th rounder, I feel thats high with players on the bench.    ?? There's waiver claims too, they have done that each year.
