BREAKING NEWS: Per Jeremy Fowler, Panthers expected to pickup Bryce Young's 5 year option

I do trust Tillis here and feel like this gives Canales a game manager at QB on a “cheap” deal while spending money elsewhere. At its peak, $26M in 2027 is middle of the road AAY for NFL QBs in 2025. It would sandwich him between Justin Fields and Baker Mayfield.

This gives them time to add speed/separation at WR, a bonafide TE threat, lock up Icky, find Moton’s replacement, , find a guy to wear the dot at LB, find an edge guy opposite Scourton, add a DL to pair with DB while he’s still in his prime and figure out the secondary.

This move, if it happens, does not guarantee Bryce is the QB beyond 2026. It does not also mean he is signing a long-term deal either.

Why do they need time to find all those things?

Replace the QB with a competent NFL vet in FA and see what you've actually got at your O skill positions.

We're not in a position to continue treading water with Young at QB. It's time to progress as a franchise.

Picking it up basically guarantees him here 2 more years due to the cost.  Furthermore I doubt he is going into year 5 without an ext so basically now we are going to need 4 years to see if he can actually play.  Up to now I think any reasonable fan can see this experiment isnt working.   I would not go cold turkey I would sign someone this offseason as well as draft a guy.

So again I dont see any real value of the 5th

I understand, but bringing someone in who will actually improve the situation is no guarantee. They're all damaged goods in some sense. Could we get marked improvement? Maybe. We surely would hope so, but it's still not guaranteed. And as for the draft, honestly we'd probably have to have a lot of luck involved, provided that we don't spend round 1 and/or 2 draft capital. Do we really want to do that notwithstanding other needs that are wanting? That's a discussion.

I don't see it as guaranteeing him two more years of being the starter, especially how he plays. Unless the light switch comes on and we see something totally different than what we've seen for the last three seasons, I don't know that Bryce lasts even another full season. Even the Tepper's have to have come-to-Jesus moments, and I just can't see Dan And Dave testing the pliability of their job strings by continuing to let Bryce continue to hot and cold. I see the option, if they exercise it, as a going through the motions---a cost-effective one last gasp at trying to save a sunk cost.
