Don't really like it, but I understand the RB situation. I mean cutting Bell, and Godfrey should free up some money. Am I wrong? Maybe thats part of Gettlemans master plan is to wait until june 1st to cut both of them...

Bell is a restricted free agent, so if someone offered him a contract and we chose not to match that contract they would have to give us a second round pick in return. I believe the second round tender amount is around $2.1 or $2.2 million dollars.

That extra two million dollars would have been nice to have when negotiating with Anthony Collins.

We can't.  Yeah, he sucks but he sucks less than the other guys on the roster.  He's been tendered at a 2nd round level as a restricted free agent.  No other team is giving up a 2nd rounder to sign him.  He'll be here again next year and he'll probably be starting.  That's not a good thing, but "the answer may already be on the roster" and "it is what it is".  Pick your cliche.

Bell isn't as bad as a lot of people make him out to be. Outside of a couple of games where he was terrible he was fine, in some games he was very good. He's an UDFA coming into his fourth season and all he's done is improve. He'll always struggle against speed guys, but if we have him pegged as the starting RT for the season it's fine by me. Could we upgrade? Sure, but we have other holes to fill first.

I hate to had to keep bringing this up, but Bell only have up 6 more QB pressures than did Gross. If you just look at the stats, that's pretty close. When you factor in the fact that there are way more pass rushing LEs than there are REs, he had a strong season. If he is better at LT, like the coaches say, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he will be more than adequate.

Regardless, I find it far-fetched that he will lose his starting spot and I find comfort in the fact that we have at least one starter returning at the tackle position, regardless of whether it's at right or left.

As some in this thread have pointed out Byron Bell isn't that bad.  This will be his third year and he's getting better.  And if you don't like the job he's doing you sure as hell won't like his backup. 

 

I'd also be surprised if we cut Godfrey.  We would only save about 2 million and getting another safety as good as he is for less is probably not going to happen.
