Which of our guys do we sign before free agency starts

Or who would you most hate to lose? With free agency less than a week away there are some key guys who are still set for free agency.  Mike Tolbert was a good part of the offense and would be missed. He has been an all pro for 2 out of the last 3 years. But are we just letting him set his own market or trying to sign him.

And what about Webb who is valuable as such a versatile guy. Does he want to still catch on as a quarterback or is he fine where he is? 

Nortman is another guy who didn't have a great 2015 but in 2013 set franchise records as a punter. 

How much is not signing them about moving on versus letting them go to free agency and  risking losing them in order to make sure we don't overpay.

Kyle Love would be my priority to resign ASAP, then Tolbert, assuming the team can negotiate a good deal with him.  I'm hoping we'll be training up a new FB to replace him, but think he's still very valuable to us for another season.

I also want us to tender Remmers. 

After that:  Nortman, Webb, Hill, Silatolu, Velasco ... I could see us keeping at least 4 of these 5. quite possibly all 5.

I'm assuming that Harper, Cotch, Tillman & Finnegan all might retire.   Not totally averse to keeping any of these guys around as depth / camp competition, but not really expecting any of these guys back on the roster.  We really do need to be bringing in some new younger talent.  We had a quite old roster this season, especially after Bene was injured.

I find it terribly disturbing about those that seem to make a joke in every thread that they don't start.

If you don't have something to offer the topic just keep the childish comments to yourself.

I think the three you mentioned will be perfectly fine coming back at a reasonable deal.  Tolbert might try and test the market but the market value for a FB isn't really all that great.

I agree about Kyle Love and Remmers being top priorities, but from an on-field perspective I think I'd be fine with Tolbert going elsewhere... saw way too many instances this year of him completely whiffing on blocks (the TD inside kick and Ginn's TD run against AZ are top of mind) and he's no longer an effective short yardage runner. 

I feel like there has to be someone out there that can be a better blocker while still contributing the 1 catch and 3-4 carries per game that he did, with the blocking being key since Carolina's primary TEs are so poor in that area. The one thing I can't quantify, however, is locker room presence and how much value that might be worth.

Tillman was a great Tutor but his body just can't keep up and we'll need that roster spot for a rookie to enfuse  some youth.

i would say Finnegan but didn't get to see him enough to know if he can really hold down the nickel while Bene' plays opposite J-No.

Nortman was horrid.

As far as I  am concerned, they need to give Reamers a lifetime contract. Especially if we are counting on our new DWill to take over at RT. Quality depth, at multiple positions. Pay the man.

 

I hate the thought of losing both Peanut, and Finnegan. Along with Harper, that leaves us young, and short staffed. I wouldn't mind Finnegan being kept, but would hope we bring/sign someone who could take over that spot eventually.

 

I like Amini, and quite frankly, if it weren't for injuries I might keep him around. Velasco? bring him back, and hope to phase him out with FA/draft.

 

Nortman is an enigma. He went from decent as a rookie, to pretty good the last few years. Then this year happened. He is still doing what he is supposed to do, which is to not outkick the coverage. But on those other kicks, those shorter ones, where you need to pin them back, that he seems to have lost his touch. Is that a long term concern? Or is Swayze legitimate competition?

 

Let's see? Who else? Already brought back Jacobs, and Scott. Set at the skill positions, for now. Dwan is gone, so Love needs a solid chance, I think he's earned that much. Cox? Fresh Prince? Probably safe to say they are coming back. Who am I missing at DE? Horton got resigned. Right? Addison is safe. Duh.

 

Oh well. If I have missed anyone, let me know and we can argue their merits at that time.

 

I guess that covers my thoughts on this. Feel free to peruse them at your own convenience. Critique away. It's just my way of saying pretty much what everyone else is saying. (I was going to use the phrase "Reguritate the Party Line." But thought it may be just a tad too uncivilized.) So I guess, thanks for even reading it are in store

 

tl/dr version: Think about this for a few moments. By the time the season starts. This years team will not only have a better roster, it will be even younger than a team that was pretty young already.  We very well may lose some players that would normally make the team. Competition is at an all time high. So players will defiantly have to earn their roster spots nowadays. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to make this team. Damm it felt good to say that.

      okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.

      How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
