Kony Ealy earns game ball for Jets after his sister's death

Since he's a former Panther, figure this is relevant. Condolences to the Ealy family. Full article is here.

New York Jets defensive end Kony Ealy turned in an impressive performance on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it came with a heavy heart.

Ealy’s sister, Sierra, recently passed away at the age of 32 and Ealy received Sunday’s game ball for his courageous performance against the Jaguars.

Ealy was instrumental in the Jets win over the Jaguars, picking off a Blake Bortles pass and batting down four more passes at the line of scrimmage.

He was extremely close with his sister, as is evident in this NFL 360 video detailing their relationship.

Sierra was born with a genetic disorder that caused her severe physical disabilities and left her almost non-verbal. From a young age, Ealy knew that he was going to have to take care of his sister for as long as she was alive, a responsibility that he embraced early on as a young boy.

Ealy missed practice in the week leading up to this game for undisclosed “personal reasons”, but now those reasons have been made clear.

The Jets gave Ealy the option to sit out on Sunday, but instead, he decided to take the field after such a devastating loss.

Hats off to Ealy for going out and turning in a memorable performance in honor of his late sister.

Really hope he starts building something with the Jets. That would be phenomenal.

Hate he never worked out for us, but I'll never forget his Superbowl performance and how he almost single-handedly got us a lombardi. He has the talent. Just needs a spark in motivation.

Condolences to his family through this terrible loss.

oh that is awful to hear about his sister. man. he became her primary caregiver while he was still in high school I believe. god, I can't imagine how he's feeling. glad he was able to have a good game. it's good to remind yourself of the human side of players.

He may have had a rough start here (and one fantastic game in the Superb Owl), but he always seemed to be a great young man with a lot of character who had come up through some incredibly hard times.

I hope he keeps having success with the Jets and reaches that immense potential that he has within him.

As someone that has a down syndrome brother I can understand the bond he must of had with his sister. My bond with my brother is very special. God bless you and your family Kony. May the Lord give you and your family strength in this difficult time.

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Broncos part ways with a CB on the roster bubble Broncos get: 2026 seventh-round pick Panthers get: CB Damarri Mathis The Broncos have a rare problem among NFL teams: too many cornerbacks. ESPN's Jeff Legwold projects they could move on from Mathis, who was very good as a rookie in 2022 before losing his starting job after the defense's slow start in 2023. He played just 27 defensive snaps after Week 6 that season and 80 more across 10 games in 2024. With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around. Mathis' best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn't been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina's primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash, similar to what the Commanders did when they sent running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers.
    • They can get fuged for a 6th and 7th. Doesn't make sense for us for anything less than a 4th and them paying a majority of his salary.
