Should the Panthers try and extend Funchess before the season?

Looking at how some of these WR contract are turning out, a 24 year old Funchess will be looking at 10+ million per year on the open market. If Funchess walks next year we are looking at a huge hole at receiver once again, even if we draft a WR.

I am sure his agent is seeing the inflated market and will probably make signing him to an extension now very difficult.

We can try, but it wouldn’t make sense for Funchess not to trust in himself. He could potentially raise his stock by even more this year.

I’m happy with how much improvement he’s made though. He was so terrible as a rookie, but his route running and hands are gotten so much better.

It does... he could get a TON of guaranteed money right now or go out and get a career changing injury...

This. I can't imagine Funchess would be willing to sign right now for what we should be willing to pay.

He should probably bet on himself and try to have a career year and cash in big time. And we should probably be willing to wait and see that he's capable of that type of year before giving him $10M+ per year which he would probably command if he was a free agent right now.

I am not saying to low ball him it needs to be fair. We won't be able to offer anything close to market value come next year. If he has a 1000 yard season with another 8+ touchdowns he could be looking at a contract richer than ARob or Watkins.

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
