Voth doesn't think Safety or DE is in the cards for 1st

I'm skeptical that the flavor of the day (one), Justin Reid, as is the pick in so many mock drafts, is going to be our first rounder. He's a safe pick, no doubt, but will he be the best value? Probably not. Bill Voth basically says the same in so many words on the team's site.

"If you're going to spend a first-round pick on a safety - especially for a defensive scheme where that position is relatively low in the pecking order of importance - it should be on a tone-setter, a guy who'd immediately change the swagger of the backend. James or Fitzpatrick could do that. I'm not as sold on Ronnie Harrison or Justin Reid, who's seen a recent surge in mock draft matchmaking."

Voth acknowledges that either Reid or Harrison would likely be day-one starters, but insinuates that this may still turn out to be the case for some other later round prospects.

As for defensive end, Voth flatly says that there's no one worth a first except Bradley Chubb. He may be right, but, as an aside, Stephen White (former NFL DE, now analyst) had this to say about Marcus Davenport

"For now I have Bradley Chubb ahead of Davenport as the better edge rusher prospect. Chubb is a little more polished and has a little better motor. But I want to be clear that Davenport has just as much if not more potential than Chubb."

White admittedly doesn't have access to college film, and simply watched four games, but he makes some good points (complete with gifs). It's worth a look.

But getting back to Voth, he says that he would "use No. 24 on a cornerback or best player available who would just so happen to line up with another position of need." He also mentioned that a WR or TE Hayden Hurst wouldn't be totally out of the picture, or even trading down if your top 5 or 6 guys are gone.

So, there it is. Perhaps Reid will be the pick, but given the circumstances there are those of us that believe that picking him would not exactly be swinging for the fences. The same can probably be said for a lot of players at No. 24 in this class. It's going to be very interesting to see what actually goes down. I'm thinking that if Calvin Ridley or D.J. Moore fall, it's going to be one of them (provided that an equally graded CB isn't available, which I can't see at the moment). I feel the dark horse candidates would be Sony Michel or Hayden Hurst, or maybe even Mike McGlinchey, Will Hernandez or Kolton Miller.

Voth makes a fair point especially when we’re factoring in impact and value.

I’m not on the Reid train like it seems so many are on this board; he’s a solid prospect but the value we give that position combined with his abilities are not worth a first rounder.

Safeties are hyped every year and they always end up falling down boards.

The playmakers with size like a Miles Killebrew and Jaquiski Tartt in years past are the ones I’d prefer to target.

This counters my thinking, but I agree that Reid and the DEs are not good values where we pick.  I would love a trade back to add a fourth rounder and then maybe a trade up later to add a third, third rounder.

Marty will sit there at 24 and see which fish manage to get through the nets.  If not something we need, trade back.

Voth is a mouthpiece of the team. He is either completely in the dark (hard to imagine but possible) and his opinion is just an opinion. Or he knows things and his reports are certainly orchestrated. I'm not one for conspiracies but I'm not sure how to interpret anything from him anymore.

It's just odd when bloggy info guy goes corporate.

Are there examples of him saying poo just to cover for the team?

i hear all these concerns, but our safety position is consistently a liability. While i hope we go BPA in the first, i also hope that BPA just so happens to be a safety. There is not a greater need on this team than safety.

alot of needs of secondary priority, but safety is primary.

I'd group our needs like this:

Immediate Need:

  • Safety, both SS and FS

Secondary Need:

  1. RB
  2. DE
  3. WR
  4. CB
  5. OT

Developmental/Depth Need:

  1. OLB
  2. TE
  3. OG
  4. QB (backup)
  5. C

Non-need:

  • DT
  • MLB
  • Specialists

SO... in other words, I would love for the Panthers pick up an impact safety. If we are going to trade, i'd rather us trade down and stockpile picks. This roster is going to look very different going into the 2019 and 2020 seasons. we need to prepare for that.

TE developmental? Are u crazy if Greg Olsen is injured wth do we do. No way we trust Manhertz I don't care what Rivera and Turner says. We are in trouble at TE and if this is Greg's last year we have to have someone to be able to come right in and not miss a beat for our offense.

    • Well, everyone is a critic.  not much meat on the bone here in analysis but if the team needs motivation … lol   I have also heard a lot of talking head or two say that ‘Young is not in the same class as most of these teams and that in 12 of the 17 games he is the lesser QB   BR write up below  2025 record: 8-9 Last season, the Carolina Panthers made the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They won the division. Bryce Young made strides, throwing for 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 63.6 percent completion rate. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan won the 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year award. In free agency, the Panthers signed edge-rusher Jaelan Phillips and linebacker Devin Lloyd to bolster their middling defense. Carolina can win with complementary football if the offense continues to trend in the right direction. In 2026, Carolina will play the AFC North and NFC North on a first-place schedule, which includes matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and the Seattle Seahawks. The club will have a much tougher 17-game slate than it had last year, which may lead to regression. The Panthers aren't on the same level as the league's top teams. We'll see the gap between them and division-winning clubs from the previous season. 2026 projection: 6-11
    • If someone key is hurt and your bye week helps you by not forcing you to play without them, it is at a good time.  No way to know about that ahead of time.   I would concede that with 17 games and let’s say you are playoff bound, you would love to have it late
    • Hate it for him personally and hope he recovers well. But honestly, reaching an injury settlement and moving on would probably be a best case scenario for the Panthers. This signing always felt like a desperate knee-jerk reaction to losing out on Milton Williams. Williams was a logical scheme fit while Wharton just wasn't. He's best used as a rotational interior pass rushing specialist in an even front. He's way too small to play the nose in a 3-4 and he lacks the length and juice to play the end. Healthy he's a nice roster piece in the right scheme at the right price but we overpaid him to play him in the wrong scheme. The signing just never made any sense to me and I said so at the time.
