My biggest issue with the 2018 team - the Front 4/Washington

We currently have more sacks than literally 1 team in the NFL.   We aren't getting to the QB.  Our defensive line hasn't played up to what our team expects/expected.  Washington isn't scheming up ways to get to the QB.  Instead we just watch the front four almost get to the QB as they manage to make play after play on us.

The DL is the biggest issue we have IMO.  It IMO actually has been an issue slowly building.  Hidden by better/more experienced DCs.  Our front 4 can't get the job done.  .

I thought we did a pretty good job getting pressure starting in the second qtr.  Three sacks, including two by our defensive line,  and a few hurries.  That is why we held them to only field goals after the first flurry of points.  Also, there are actually 7 teams that have fewer sacks than we do, although that is not much better.

The more worrisome part is that most of our sacks have come in two games.  6 vs Dallas, 3 vs the Skins, 3 against the other teams that throw the ball more.  That has to improve for us to have even a ghost of a chance against the Aints or other pass happy teams.

Gotta blitz more.  Wilks blitzed too much, Washington not enough.  The difference this year being though, hopefully we now have two reliable corners to cover for the 2-3 seconds necessary in Bradberry and Jackson opposed to last year's mess of bad Bradberry and rotating players at CB2.

Screw the zone.  If our CBs can't cover for 3 seconds while we bring 5 after the QB, doesn't matter.  Not to mention playing 5-10 yards off the WR allows short passes to pick us apart every...single...year.

Addison is gonna get cut next year if he doesn't step up. IIRC we save like $6 Million if we cut him next year.

ETA I just looked it up. We'd save $7.25 Mil. He GONE folks. Better start looking at first round DEs. I guess we're saving Haynes for next year? lol...

As long as teams continue to get the ball out in under 3 seconds. We, and almost any team, will struggle to get home. Context people.

And that brings another issue up.  If other teams are able to get the ball out that fast against us then maybe we need to change up our scheme.

I agree that the pass rush has been, at best, inconsistent this year.  However them only having more sacks than 1 team misleading due to the fact most teams haven't had their bye week yet.  We actually are 17th in Sack % - not great, but not that bad.  I thought we were getting good push against the Redskins - Smith just did a very good job getting the ball out and they had a good offensive game-plan coming in.  But they really didn't do much against us in the second half.  Nothing substantial anyway.

I could see our sack numbers getting a lot better over the next couple of weeks considering our opponents.  Eagles for example have not held up very well in protection this season.

Mario has been doing just fine. He and Poe have been dealing with the most double teams from what I have noticed. (I don't have numbers but it is something I pay attention to when I re-watch the games)

Kawann Short is the biggest issue with the line right now. He has been getting practically no push on the inside and he isn't even being double teamed. Qb's have been able to step up into a clean pocket against us far to often which is why our ends are having trouble getting to the QB. I am not even looking for Short to get sacks. He just needs to create any kind of pressure and help collapse the pocket. If our ends are getting boxed out and the QB tries to step up into the pocket Short should be in his face.

Sorry to point this out but we are 1 of 4 or 5 teams to have there bye so far.  So just number of sacks don't tell the story.  So far this team has had 3 games where they have gotten at least good pressure (Dallas, Skins, Cinny) and 2 with really no pressure ( NY, Falcons).  We actually did a really good job of pressuring Smith in the last game.  Washing seems to learn more toward McDermott's type of defense with a lot more zone blitz or just 4 down rushing as opposed to Wilks,  blitz every other play.  It theory it should lead to better coverage on the back end but it has not so far.

I think it's ben pretty clear the front 4 aren't generating enough pressure.  We'll have a rotation during games with Horton and Addison on the outside that gets us virtually zilch.  Peppers can't go these days as a 3-Down lineman, Addison is a speed rusher, Horton isn't that great.  Obada is the closest thing but we are just average.

More than anything else though, I'm just becoming tired of our defensive scheme.  Given Rivera is a defensive coach, this should be our top quality.  If we don't make a deep run, I say hit refresh.  Even in the case we go to the NFCCG.

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
