Could Norv stick around with Ron gone?

Norv has overall actually done a very good job. Yes at times playcalling has seemed like Shula is back here but for the most part it's been solid and in terms of implementing his offensive gameplan he's done a superb job. Cam was having a career year before his arm went out, McC has looked like one of the best playmakers in the league, and young guys like Moore, Samuel and Thomas have shown tremendous improvement over the course of the season. All this with questionable personnel on the OL.

In recent years there have been several cases of incoming head coaches keeping a coordinator from the past regime in place, so it's not really unheard of. It definitely depends on who the head coach coming in is, what side of the ball his specialty is and any past experience with Norv, but I do think Norv has done a well enough job to stick around and be the man in charge of the offense. I guess he could also decide he doesn't want to stick around without Ron as it did seem he came back to coaching partially due to his past relationship with Ron.

What would you guys think of keeping Norv here without Ron?

I agree with your overall assessment. While there have been some red zone play-calling situations that left me scratching my head, Turner has done a masterful job at designing a scheme to get the ball up and down the field. Wasn't that long ago when this team needed 2-3 three-and-out series before they got anywhere.

If I recall correctly there were a couple red zone possessions in that Seahawks game where we ran the ball every single play before settling for a FG... And it wasn't goal line, it was from like the 10. That was unfathomable, but outside of a couple things like that he's done everything you could ask for from an OC and put players in positions to make plays. Offensive struggles this year have 100% been on the players, largely Cam's bum shoulder lately and struggling OL.

The Bears did keep Fangio around while bringing in a new HC. If the new coach is offense-minded, Norv would be gone. If he is a defensive guy, then there is a chance.

I really think Scott is the reason or liaison between Norv and his more modern approach. That is who I really want to keep around.

In an alternate reality, I'd have Ron handle the D, Norv handle the O and hire a third coach to handle the T.

T is for time, this coach would manage the clock, timeouts and work with the players to improve the D and O in the last two minutes of a half/game.

After 8 years of Ron screwing the pooch in the final minutes it is clear that he needs help in this area.

If Ron agrees to be the shotcaller on Defense next season he needs to stay. He's one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, has won 3 division titles, one conference title, super bowl appearance, and I believe he deserves one more season. Having a 3rd offensive coordinator in 3 seasons and a 4th defensive coordinator is not the way to build a winning program.

If we get rid of Ron it would be time for a completely new staff, in which I'm all for.

Yes in Madden it would make sense to keep Ron as DC but irl the new coach would lose one game and every idiot would be calling for Rivera to get his job back

    • Just chasing targets is a fools game. Chase averaged 85 yrds and .76 TDs per game his first year and 87.16 yrds, and .75 TD's per game his second year. Statistically the same. NOT an improvement. Puka saw no increase either. Yes, Waddle's went down because he had to share targets with another receiver - just like TMac will have to share targets with Coker next year so you have actually just made my point concerning Coker. Olave saw an increase in targets but Carr replaced Dalton and even with the increase in targets, his production was pretty flat (83 extra yards and 1 more TD for the entire year). And Wilson's number did increase but the Jets replaced the other two receivers and their contribution was significantly down from Davis's and Moore's. Again, nothing in those numbers should lead anyone to believe there will be a big leap for Tmac next year.
    • See my previous post. You're also leaving out that T-Mac was likely hitting a rookie wall, like 95% of rookies do late in their first season, combined with the added attention on him by defenses, which in turn would be why Bryce looked Coker's way down the stretch.  With Coker playing like that to start next year, defenses will have to pay attention to it, which will then also make things easier for T-Mac. All of which is also ignoring that T-Mac will just be a better player next year than he was this year, assuming he works on his game this offseason, which we all know he will be.  If a player who was already your clear cut #1 comes back even better his next season, you're going to make sure you're throwing it his way more often, no matter who else you have. Again, Coker's added targets won't be at the expense of T-Mac's, they will BOTH be taking targets from the rest of the team.  Not to mention, we should be passing it more next year to begin with, seeing as we'll have both of them hopefully ready to go full speed Week 1, which again, will help both their target totals increase. Coker looks like a really good player, but even the most optimistic person can't say he looks like he has #1 potential, he has very solid to maybe even high end #2 potential.  You're not taking targets away from the reigning OROY who looks like a true Top 15 WR already to get your #2 targets, you increase both of them by taking from the others.
