Since we're stuck with him another year, this is the best scenario.  His reputation is built on defense so there should be zero excuses for poor performance on that side of the ball.  Get him a pass rusher and lets see how things go.

I love your perspective.

Quite different from mine, just happy that our defense will be in the best hands they can be.  Our defense should be the most consistent it has been in years.

Not going to sit here and say there is no excuses. There is only so much Rivera can control, and way to much that is beyond his control, that he still gets blamed for.

As it should be at this point. Shoild have been done after Steelers fiasco wven though warning signs were there all season that Washington was way in over his head.

Agreed this has to be a Tepper inspired call though. If Rivera is the guy that we thought he was when he was hired, there should be no reason we aren't a top 5 D every year.

I remember Tepper calling Ron a defensive genius. This really smells like a Tepper demand instead of a decison Ron came to on his own.

I tend to agree. This is a "put up or shut up" moment for Ron this year. He'll be judged on the team's performance, with more scrutiny on the defense.

That's fine.

What DOES bother me is the idea that Rivera will be so focused on the defense, that he will over-reach in the draft and in FA in order to try and fix the defense. I would be concerned with the potential for over-paying and drafting a prospect above his expected draft slot to do so.

While we all have concerns about the OLine and Center, I don't expect as much movement there, now.

Not only is Ron trying to make it work with Carolina, in the back of his mind, he has to be considering this as an audition for his NEXT job, if it comes to that.

Not ideal.

    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
    • Uh oh, Nicole Tepper hugged him. In all seriousness though every time I see more about him my hopes get higher. Smart, great attitude, prototype size and measurables, and athletic. He could be a great one.
