The Answer to the FS Position is on the Roster

We have several candidates to take over at FS. Stop panicking.

Kai Nacua

Cole Luke

On top of those two that nobody ever talks about, we have some natural box safeties and CBs who might could transition.

Quin Blanding
Searcy
Cockrell
Gaulden
Parms
Doss
Elder
Seymour
Thornton
Ballard

Someone, not named Colin Jones, from that list will probably be our starting FS, barring us picking up someone else that is floating out there/gets cut. Just get used to it and move on. We gon' be alright!

Just like left tackle, we’ve been through stop gaps and projects, with the same inconsistent results.

Time to invest in the fs position, but that’s not Ron’s philosophy, he’ll keep looking for diamonds in the rough, meanwhile the secondary will either continue to underperform or be heavily reliant on a top 5 pass rush.

The Panthers almost never draft safeties. They tend to draft corners or tweener athletes and try to convert them into a safety. I'd argue they haven't drafted a true safety since Nate Salley in 2006, and haven't spent an early draft pick on a true safety since Deon Grant in 2000. Talk about devaluing the position....

When we're getting home on the pass rush a lot of the safety concerns will go out of the window, no matter who we had back there last year it was gonna look bad.

People need to realize that more than anything:

1) We were VERY old at DE (I love Pep)

2) We were VERY inexperienced with UDFA talent (Horton / Cox / Obada) drafted (Haynes)

KK, had his best seasons when CJ, and Addison were able to force QB's to step up, same for Cox in PHI, he has been flanked with premier talent on the edge of that defense (Graham, Sweat, Bennett)

So once the pass rush finds it's stride we should see the secondary able to make more plays as QB's are under more duress.

I am not one to just say no.  A few of these guys might pan out. I seem to remember Cole Luke was having a good camp until he got hurt.  Gauldin is in his second year and should be a bit more comfortable at the position.

I also think that Washington made our defense much worse by his asinine play calling.  Rivera did a much better job and our defense was much better.  A little too late but at least we have something to build off of.

Like I said a few of these guys might pan out but I also believe we will sign a Veteran to be the frontrunner of this group.

Our current "Sign Berry" troll is only going to bitch and moan (throw poo around) about every player we suggest until we sign Berry (Which ain't going to happen)

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
