Butler Chicago Breakdown

Since there was a lot of discussion about his play last game I had Vinny break it down and wanted to share.

I think the problem with Butler is that other non high draft pick guys are out playing him. 

The narrative that Butler can be "useful" despite his high draft pick status is a bit asinine. 

 

Especially given that he has had some really good talent around him. Star wasn't a stat sheet guy but he was always there, why? Because of the double teams he demanded and the pressure he applied which in turn made other players better and flourish. I don't see that with Butler. I've never seen him command anything. 

Also at the time of I remember correctly. Gman made the pick basses on the fact that KK was still not signed. Maybe a contingency plan?

He's always had the tools, that's why he was drafted. The problem is he usually hasn't had the heart or desire to become one of the best at his position. You can't force someone to buy in.

He’s clearly a massive bust but it never made sense at all to even consider cutting him. He’s okay depth and you won’t find anything better than him for less than what we’re paying him. We’d save about $1M by cutting him with $1M dead cap hit. Just doesn’t make sense. And his roster spot in a depth was role was pretty much secured in early August when he got a $0.5M roster bonus. Right call not to pick up his 5th year option but also right call to keep him around this year and not rule out past this year too depending on price and if he progresses at all or fits better in a 3-4.

Ppl want things to be oversimplified.

Butler was drafted as insurance should KK not stay with the team. Due to his size and strength, the team has more often than not asked him to play the NT role.

I think that the 3-4 DE and 4-3 UT are the best fits for him, but if given the choice between him and Obada... idk... tough call

Has he lived up to the 1st round label?  No, probably not.  Would I have him as a backup DL at 2-3 million per season, probably.

Kyle love was and undrafted FA and he has outperformed Butler every year they have both been here.

Butler either doesn't have the skill to take it to the next level in the NFL or he is lazy. Either way he's a huge bust.

I don’t really see it happening but hoping he comes out playing hard early in the year.  If he doesn’t see his career is at a crossroad he isn’t paying attention.

     I don’t think Butler’s agent could spin his efforts (or lack there of), any better than the author. 

  My first question would be how is he holding his spot in double teams when his main move is to turn his back and get driven to the other side of the line? It happens with single blocks as well. He was driven to the opposite A gap by a backup RT on a play he was given credit for causing the RB to bounce outside. He was long gone by then and didn’t force anything. 

  No burst ,ever. Questionable effort at best. Has no clue how to use his hands and no desire to learn. Reaching for plays where most on here could have done the same thing  as an accomplishment. That should tell you something. 

  Between this and wanting to keep Matt Kalil, I’m not buying what is trying to be sold here.
