Tepper was "very frustrated" losing to Falcons

Rivera will be "Heavily sought after". Cool so the Browns or Dolphins will have a new HC. Two things:
1. ROFL
2. GL with that as you don't get Cam and Luke upon your departure

It doesn't matter what he does elsewhere.  He's not doing anything here so he needs to go.

I don’t think there is ever a good reason to fire a coach mid season unless you have some young up and comer you want to give a test run. Norv would obviously get the job so that’s not the case here. Could definitely fire Hurney now and get a head start on the GM search but you can’t really do anything about the coaching search until after the season anyways, so no reason to fire Ron before that. Honestly, he’s earned better than that too.

The only reason to unload a coach in mid-season (or earlier) is admitting you should have unloaded him at the end of the previous season.  Different sport, but the Toronto Maple Leafs just fired their Coach (Babcock) after 20+ games of an 82 game season, but that follows reports that they considered firing him in the offseason.  And just as you said, the did have a guy waiting in the wings that they were interested in giving a try.

While I think his utility to the Panthers was effectively over a season or more ago, Rivera has earned enough points to not be embarrassed by the organization on the way out.  I don't know how many of those points remain after losing by 38 after a bye week and then by 26 to a 2-7 team at home.  If they get buried today, all bets might be off.

He does give the visual indicators that he has given up.  But, as I have said, I would part ways with Hurney first, unless I were going to dictate who the next coach will be.   That still would not bode will for the GM.

From CBSsports.com

Tepper was very frustrated by last week's loss to Atlanta, a team who entered the game with just two wins, the sources said, which was obvious post-game. He held an impromptu session with the local media midweek, and though he declined to address the future of Rivera or general manager Marty Hurney during the briefing, the fact he held the briefing at all left some in the organization wondering if it was a precursor to changes.

Rivera has one year left on his deal and would be heavily sought after if the Panthers were to go in a different direction. Tepper may not be inclined to offer the kind of extension Rivera's cumulative record with the Panthers suggests he is worth, and the owner may lean toward a more analytical, offensive-minded head coach, according to some who know him.

Furthermore, Tepper has been unsure of whether quarterback Cam Newton would merit another massive contract extension since purchasing the team, and Newton has been hurt most of the last two years and also entering his final contract year in 2020. Tepper confirmed that all options are open for Newton in 2020, with several executives from other teams believing a trade is looming after the season.

Panthers brass always knew that 2019 was likely to be a defining year for them, given Tepper's eventual desire to become more hands-on with the football side of the operation after focusing on the business side in his first year at the helm. Sitting at 5-5 and currently on the outside of the NFC playoff picture with a challenging schedule looming, the import of these finals games is lost on no one.

I honestly think a blowout today means Rivera is fired. 40-10 or so would do it.

We will win and Rivera will perfom one of his miracle 7-9 or 8-8 finishes and blame Cam's injury in order to save his job. This has been his rinse and repeat since 2011.

Rivera has another 10 years in the league. Just because he has burned out his welcome doesnt mean another wouldnt love to have him.

Yeah, I can easily see Ron going out like John Fox did. A couple of average to bad performances at coaching stops along the way and then just hang it up.

He's not an awful coach, just a depressingly mediocre one.

Yeah, because he was such a huge attraction before he got the Carolina job.

Just add 9 years of utter mediocrity and total lack of imagination and innovation on top of that and what other team WOULDN'T want such an attractive candidate!

I don't have any doubt Rivera will get another job. Might or might not be a head coaching job. At the very least he'll get another DC gig at which he could do well enough to get another head coaching job.

And who knows? Maybe he will be better next time. A lot of guys who were lousy on their first head coaching stint did a lot better the second time around. He would definitely need to change some of his tendencies though.

Mind you, none of this justifies keeping him.

    • As I've said numerous times the last few days, having Thielen on the field has literally 0% to do with my views on this (I've even said I think Renfrow is going to take a ton of snaps from Thielen anyways).  He has more value to this team without playing a single snap than a 2026 5th round draft pick does for the franchise.   His value is helping set up T-Mac, XL, Coker, and Horn for long term success by helping them learn how to be pros, how to go about their business, how to train, how to do all the little things that helped turn Thielen from a D2 undrafted player into a borderline Vikings legend.
    • He only wants to be traded because it's the Vikings who are calling. If he didn't want to be here, he could have retired, instead he took a pay raise to come back for another season.  I get it, it's an opportunity that he'd like to take, but we shouldn't cut off our nose to spite our face because he now wants to jump at this opportunity less than two weeks before the season starts. I'm not against trading him, I'm just against trading him for a return that doesn't help our team as much as having him on the roster would.  I'll put it this way, if a 5th is the best we can get for him from the Vikings and he's now dug in on not wanting to stay this year, I'm saying screw you and trading him to any of the other 30 teams besides the Vikings for the best offer we can get. He was perfectly happy here a week ago, if the Vikings soured him on that and then want to get him for peanuts, then screw them both.
    • Yes and no, he wants to go back and his wife most definitely wants to go back. He took a bunch of team mates to Minny and has worked out with JJ two offseasons in a row. It's where both him and his wife are from.    The money was basically a please come back and help Bryce. Pretty please...here's some more money.    Now he's agreed to a paycut to go back to the Vikings.
