Would still like to see him bring in Phillips. Making the transition from college to pro isn't going to be that easy and have an old school DC's experience with a new young assistant DC's imagination and creativity could be a really good thing.

Totally agree but it seems we will have very little NFL experience on our coaching staff.

Pretty deflating news. Here's a write up on the Rhule/Snow Baylor defense:

Also a fun quote:

So when Phil Snow says that it usually takes until year two for their defense to take hold, it’s almost certainly because they are installing a very multiple package and teaching a lot of technique and scheme.

Whatever. At least we're trying to shake things up I guess.

Yeah. but you gotta admit, I do have a soulful gaze, do you not?

you look like you are about to tell me about the time you got sent to pick up your co-workers lunches, but you ended up eating all of them in your car on the way home, and how much the embarrassment has negatively effected you.

That dude looks like a mechanic.  A really good mechanic.  Never trust a handsome mechanic.

To me, he looks like the villain played by John Torturro in "Secret Window". They called him John Shooter, I think.

For the record, that movie sucked.

Fellas,

One of the fellow coaches on the football staff I’m on was a rising senior at Temple back in 2013. He said that coach Rhule has had the same philosophy and attitude since he met him ~7 years ago. He’s told me stories about how he had to use some tough love to get the senior class to buy in.  He’s told me nothing but great stuff since we were in a clinic last winter with his OL coach

He told me coach Snow is the greatest defensive mind he’s been around. He learned more in that one season with Snow than he has with anyone else. This is a coworker and friend I wholeheartedly trust and believe that he says what he means. I think we found some special people with Rhule and (allegedly) Snow coming to Charlotte.

Good info.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
