Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

NAS

Recommended Posts

Free-agent quarterback Cam Newton is now waiting for his next NFL opportunity. In the meantime, he’s working out — and sharing his workouts on social media.

A set of images and videos includes one in which Newton, after a set of pulldowns (great for the arms, I think it is), says this: “All I know is work. All I know is work. That’s all I know. They gave up on me.”

He’s surely talking about the Panthers, who cut Newton earlier this week. And he surely seems to be motivated by the decision to rip up his contract and to make him a free agent.

Although Newton seems to be in tip-top shape, the NFL’s COVID-19 procedures make it impossible for teams to give Newton a proper physical, for now. Given his foot, ankle, and shoulder issues of the past, it’s critical for any interested team to be able to have its doctors closely inspect him.

No reports or rumors have emerged linking Newton to a new team, yet. The Chargers should be interested. Other teams (Dolphins, Patriots, Washington, Raiders) possibly, maybe could become interested. Surely, at some point, someone will give Newton a closer look and decide to do business with one of the best quarterbacks in the business, when healthy.

I wonder if Cam wants to pay back the 40 million he received over the past 2 years. Sure he is angry at the team but how long are they supposed to hang on handing him 20 million plus per year to not play. Honestly I hope he recovers but am not angry the Panthers moved on. This is the way it goes in the NFL.

The Chargers aren't interested.

Nor are the Redskins, Patriots, Dolphins or Raiders.

Ditto the Broncos, Lions, Rams, Bills, Texans, Seahawks, Steelers, Jets, Giants, Falcons, Browns, Bengals, Saints or Bucs.

Same for the 49ers, Packers, Cowboys, Eagles, Vikings,  Raiders, Chiefs, Bears,  Ravens, Titans, Cardinals, Chargers and Colts....

....Panthers not interested either.

Some sort of material change in the QB picture will have to occur with one of those teams in order for Cam to get a look.

Could be a while.

He shouldn't give any of that money back, he was hurting playing for the team...now if he was injured outside of football that prevented him from playing, then yes they should get the money back.

I was one that wanted him back in 2020, but I had no illusions he would be in a Panther uniform beyond then.  I expected he was going to be in the role of a abridge to 2021 or get deal before the deadline in 2020, if he proved he was healthy and looked like surviving a season would not be an issue.  The best scenario in that thinking was they extend him a year or two, but I realized that was not likely.

I had also increasingly come to accept my initial wish of him being here for 2020 was probably not going to happen.

Did the Panthers give up on him?  Yes, they did.  I'm not angry they did after the last couple of seasons, and I never thought that possibility was unreasonable.

The irony is that I wanted to see them pursue Bridgewater last year, as a potentially solid backup should Cam not be able to finish the season or his shoulder not have recovered.  Had they done that, I think we would be exactly where we are today.

The panthers quit on him and kicked him to the curb like yesterday’s garbage. It was extremely unprofessional and a real slap in the face. I am a fan of the Panthers first or foremost, so I won’t dump the Panthers like they did to QB1, but giving up on him will be a decision that haunts the panthers for a very long time.

also, fug Marty Hurney.

The amount of revenue Cam produced for the mediocre franchise, they should pay his next contract while he plays on a different team

Its a business, Cam had every right to want an extension, the team had every right to not want to give him an extension.

I still think the team would have been ok with him playing the last year on his deal.  My guess is Cam overvalued what he could get elsewhere.

This. Period.

The Carolina Panthers did not "give up on him." They made a business decision largely based on the fact mentioned above: a $40M investment which yielded zero returns over the past 2 years.

Put it in terms of the typical Panther fan: you spend $400 on a penny stock with expectations that a return on your investment will be favorable. 2 years later and that stock hasn't performed as expected and it's cost you money (call it "dead cap money"). You going to rethink that particular company and go in a different direction or will you continue to hope for a turnaround?

    • I have more faith in XL improving than I do in Tmac being a true number 1 recuever
    • Round 1. TMac arguably the best WR in the draft Round 2. Scour ton mentioned as a possible 1st round edge.     Texas A&M did not use him the same way Purdue did. After the 2023 season he was listed as a first round grade. I believe had Texas A&M used him like they did at Purdue he never makes it out of round 1. Round 3 Princely Umanmielen, we'll go by Princely.  Another highly graded player we got in a lower round. As the video suggests, even if he plays only on passing down it's a positive. Give him a couple of years to develop a he could be a three down player.  Round 4a Etienne IMO a huge upgrade over Blackshear. I can see him in a similar role as CMC without the heavy workload. He can run in between the tackles and has some shifty moves. Give Canales some flexibility. A fellow huddler pointed out UGA running backs don't see the field if they cannot pick up the blitz. Really good pick. Round 4b Ransom a hard hitting safety that has played three different positions on defense. Great pick Round 5a Cam Jackson a massive NT in round 5. I believe a solid rotational pick in a lower round. We added a beast that could make offenses quiver when he's lined up with Brown. Great Value  Round 5b Evans This is another player that can block and has good hands. He also had better seasons before 2024. As a rookie he's probably leaps and bounds better than Ian Thomas. I think he gives us a three headed monster at TE.  Round 6 Horn Jr. Many believe he's just going to be a KR/PR player. I believe there are going to be packages for him to get on the field as a WR. His speed with TMac and Thielen in the slot could be special. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in training camp. I've watched some film and he is very explosive.  Overall I love our picks. I honestly believe all of them will contribute this season. I don't believe we reached on one player in this draft.  This weekend we get a small look at these rookies
