Panthers Wont partake in Trevor Lawerence sweepstakes

Let's see brand new coaching staff, brand new system on both sides of the ball, and a bunch of guys who haven't played one down together. That's not exactly a good equation for success. I can see them winning a few games just by the skin of their teeth but that's it.

I disagree vehemently. We are installing a brand new offense, defense and have a coach that's never coached a down in the NFL, while turning over our entire defense, adding a new QB and further going to do all of this without a full offseason?

We're going to start off SLOW next year. If teddy gets hurt and were 1-5, kiss this season goodbye. Tepper won't let us NOT tank in that scenario

Undrafted Jake Delhomme led us to a SB. Excuse me if I don't plead with my team to lose games over a QB who may or may not be elite in the NFL.

I'm going to disagree with your argument. How often does a average QB take a team to the Super Bowl and win? Out of the past twenty Super Bowls there have been five QB who you could consider average. Two out of those five won and that was because they had all-time Defenses. Your team pretty much already has to be built for a average QB to step in and lead them to a championship.

I understand not wanting to tank but situations like Delhomme are rare, so you're better off searching for a true franchise QB.

I need everyone to think for just a moment about the word "tank", because I see it tossed around a lot in here.

Last season, we did everything within our power to win...we pulled out all the stops.  Switched to a new defense, drafted players for said defense, brought in expensive free agents for said defense......got Cam "healthy", and surrounded him with some legit skill players....and NOTHING.  Got our coach fired in season, and started free agency as one of the very worst rosters in the entire NFL.

That's not tanking.  That's being so bad at your jobs that you go out of your way to win, and fall flat on your face.

We weren't tanking, and not signing Anderson and Bridgewater isn't tanking either...it's just being smart about the future of your team.  You have holes all over the roster, so you need draft picks...and to roll over as much $$$ as possible to start the rebuild...that's looking at your situation and understanding the business of football, and looking at your division and seeing that you are by far and away the worst team in it.

So...my point on this very lengthy post.  We didn't tank, we are just a bad football team.  Once you find yourself at the bottom, it's smart to figure out the very best way possible to go back to being a winning team....and that ain't signing Robby Anderson and Teddy Bridgewater.  The answer was plan like hell for the future, get really smart in the draft, lay off the free agents, and clear up some of the dead weight on the roster by cutting older, expensive, hurt players.

Doesn't matter how you sugarcoat it...what you're talking about is tanking.

"I don't want us to tank...I just want us to trot out Will Grier at QB, who clearly isn't ready anytime soon to be starting at QB.  Oh and while we're at it, let's not sign any good free agents, let's just patch together a ragtag 53-man roster with as many vet minimum bargain bin players who won't improve our team at any position, but will maximize all of our compensatory picks.  The cheaper the better.  Let's also cut any of our vets if they save us any money.  Christian McCaffrey?  Psh, more like Christian McGimmeThat3rdRoundCompensatoryPick baby!!".

"WHAT?! Tank?!!? How dare you use that word...that's insulting.  No no, I don't want us to tank at all".

What you're suggesting is throwing a season or two away with the understanding that you're going to be a bottom-two team in the NFL.  Neither you nor anyone else who is suggesting this "definitely not tanking, wink wink" approach can explain how you get the entire team to buy into this system.  We're talking about a large portion of players who will not even be there for the glory period after this tank, when we're supposedly competing for Super Bowls with Trevor Lawrence or whatever.  These players are putting their careers, longevity, health, money, etc. on the line to play for a coach and FO who willfully neglected to even attempt to put a winning roster together.  But f#@# them, right?  As long as we probably possibly maybe start winning three seasons from now!!!

We're talking about a coach who has made a name for himself with his uncanny ability to completely transform bottom-dwelling football programs into winners after 2-3 years.  Will it work in the NFL?  TBD...but hell, I think he's earned the right to earn a shot at it.  I can't believe after the last two seasons we just suffered through, that people are complaining that we possibly improved too much.

2019: "Damn, the Panthers suck!!"

2020: "Damn, the Panthers aren't sucking enough!"

Depends on how you evaluate Tom Brady.  Talent wise he is just average

There's a spectrum between all out tanking and going all in. It's not like the Panthers are going all in here. Outside of Bridgewater, they didn't make a single major free agent signing. Robby? A #2 receiver with a 2 year contract we can EASILY get out of after 1 year? That's not splurging in free agency. Everyone is pretty much young players with upside. We're not throwing $20 million at Clowney or offering our 1st round pick for a flashy veteran like Indy did with Buckner. We spent some money to create the makings of an electrifying offense with Bridgewater, CMC, Moore, Anderson and Samuel. How fun is that going to be to watch? I'll take that over 16 games of Grier and a number 1 pick

Back to all the tank for Trevor posts again.

Honestly I am glad the Panthers aren't tanking and are trying to compete in 2020. While we will struggle on defense the offense should be better than the past 2 years with most guys healthy and a new system in place. This year should set us for the future.

I have no clue how many games we will win but the whole idea of stripping the team of talent to tank "naturally" was and is a stupid idea as if we can simply get a quarterback and rebuild quickly. It can work if you have a fundamentally good team having a down year, then you can get lucky and get a good QB and do well. Or like the Rams, get a new coach and start over but they are the exception not the rule. Teams traditionally in the bottom like Cincy, Cleveland, Miami etc stay at the bottom even as they keep bringing in QBs and high round picks each year.

Yup, no QB can win without a good/great defense.
