So what exactly does Marty Hurney do?

Here is a look at the front office of the Carolina Panthers (not including scouting).

2017 (Jerry Richardson)

General Manager – Marty Hurney

Director of Player Personnel – Mark Koncz

Director of Team Administration – Rob Rogers

2020 (David Tepper)

Marty Hurney General Manager

Mark Carrier Executive Director of Football Staff

Jeff Morrow Executive Director of Player Personnel

Sean Padden Vice President - Football Operations

Bryan Porter Director of Football Operations

Taylor Rajack Director of Football Analytics

Pat Stewart Director of Player Personnel

Samir Suleiman Director of Player Negotiations & Salary Cap Manager

I would be interested in hearing what Hurney's day to day is. It looks to me that a whole lot of people are doing the things he used to do.

Exactly which freed him up to do what he is good at or at least that is the intent. I know some will say he sucks at everyone so that is expected but Tepper said he felt the GM job was too big for one person so he parceled it out. Seems a great way to create redundency so of anyone leaves you can keep going without missing a beat

Jeff Morrow & Don Gregory (to a degree) have been with us through it all and are the ones doing the hands-on work for Marty & now Rhule.

Jeff is by Martyat pro days, he does the scouting trips, he's the guy making the write-ups, working directly with the scouting staff.  That's the man giving Hurney the information he goes by for selection.  We've changed his title a few times but he's a big part of our good and bad at scouting.  It's not just Marty, it's a whole team effort.

Gregory was let go in 2018.

I don't get the Huddle fascination with Hurney, I really don't.  It's a wildly inconsistent and rabid group on this topic.

Clearly, no one here is close to the Panthers.  We're all "outside" looking in.  We don't know what Hurney is bringing to the table.  What we do know is that our owner has no problem getting rid of pieces he doesn't like.  Obviously, Tepper sees something valuable there.

We're getting hung up on his "title" and the "baggage" instead of asking how the team is doing right now.  Our draft last year seems pretty darn good.  We haven't broken the bank for any questionable veterans.  The team is playing hard and trending up.

People point at the new staff headed by Rhule and say things like "It's all on Rhule" when speaking about the last draft.  Ok, fine.  Why is it not "All on Rivera" in prior years?  The inconsistency here is maddening.  The truth is probably somewhere in between.  The most likely scenario is that Hurney is someone who heavily weighs and listens to others, in addition to using his own input.  It would explain a lot of decisions in the past, as well as the recent changes.

That consensus building trait is one that Tepper loves, and would go a long way toward explaining why Tepper values him.

Outside of this draft, which cannot adequately be graded yet, what has Hurney done since returning that you have considered to be great moves?

    • We’re in a pickle. My best hope is we protect him and can run the ball vs most Ds and the WRs are healthy so he has every chance to not look like what he looked like in too many games last year.
    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
